How do you feel about the new "personality cards" for the American Deluxe Strat Plus?
Not sure if I like the idea...Seems kinda fake to me.

Interesting, I like the concept contingent upon one key element. Is there a battery involved or is it a completely passive electro mechanical connection? If the latter.....I likey likey..... :D

They're passive, but given that there are only three cards, embedding the electronics and adding a three way switch would have been far more practical for the user (and likely cheaper).
I can't really see an artist on stage fiddling with the back of the guitar to change a card. If there isn't a switch, having two guitars is still simpler.

So my verdict is that it's a gimmick that quickly will lose support from FMIC.

One of the personality cards features the EJ wiring mod which affects the tone controls for the neck & bridge pickups, leaving the middle pickup straight up.

Yet more blasphemy foisted upon Leo's finest stringed achievement.

I'm interested in this "yet more blasphemy" bit.
When in your opinion did the blasphemy start?

good question. It seems that, for some people, any even slightest deviation from the standards is a blasphemy. Personally, I wouldn't waste my time worrying about Fender going "the wrong way", because as a company, they have to address the needs of customers and offer different types of products, to be competitive and stay on the market. Traditional S-S-S starts will still be with us, so we will always have an option to buy what we like. Some people ("Edge") will love a robot guitar, while others (the rest of the planet) will still choose a piece of wood with a bunch of strings on it and try to create something beautiful.
For me, the blasphemy (not) started when stratocasters adopted humbuckers. ...and i like that idea

I have to agree with Arjay on this one, just more knob twirling for the shoe gazers. The last gig I played with my Strat, the only knob that got touched was the volume knob and pickup selector.

Where should I start?

1966 -- wax potting of pickups abandoned
1972 -- steel abandoned for bridge saddles and trem blocks
1982 -- "Smith era" abandons the hallmark jack ferrule and a tone control
1987 -- cheaper two-point trem bridge
1990s -- swimming pool universal pickup routing

Take your pick

Arjay

Only if an old one - Fender picks aren't like they were either :/
Especially the modern thumb picks are near unusable, because the modern plastic is so springy that they fly off your finger. But other picks too - you have to go up one thickness to get the same stiffness as before.

Yes, it probably won't last long.

It is a slick way to change the wiring of one's guitar, however.

I don't know if it was intended for onstage use. If a guy was really used to the different wirings, I suppose it could be changed between songs. Me, I'd just as soon change guitars.

+1

That's why we're so fortunate to own so many.

I kind of like most of that blasphemy!
