Noob question...I just bought an Eric Clapton Artist strat and during set up of the tremolo I found a small, about 2cm long and 2mm wide black spring, loose in the hole where the tremolo arm goes. The hole was blocked with a small sticker. I can't find any reference to this in any forum, video, or online guides. Any ideas? Thanks

On all vintage tremolo , the arm is secure with a small spring . Modern style tremolo , arm snap in the hole , no spring needed

Be carefull not to loose it if you remove the arm . You could help the spring stay in the hole with some Petroleum jelly

Thanks, that helps. So I just leave it in the hole and screw the arm in on top of it? That seems to be the only way to do it.

Yes , more you screw the arm more the arm stay "tight " in place . It is a matter of taste . But people at your music store where you bought your guitar can tell you that .

I trust you are aware that the guitar is spec'd for a blocked vibrato which you plan to activate. By your initial question it seemed that you had some unfamiliarity with the system.

Yup..I figured that part out by watching some videos, but I saw no reference to the spring.

That often raises questions from players new to the guitar. Those who don't use the vibrato are careful to store the spring in a safe place.

Ya...It should come with instructions about that. The only reason I found it was it was stuck to the tape covering the hole. If it would've fell out I never would've found it and would've been none the wiser.

It's nice to see somebody wanting to use the tremolo on the EC Strat, as it's not commonly done.
Pete Townshend uses the tremolo on some of his EC Strats, although I have a recollection of him having impaled his right hand on the arm once during a particularly aggressive spate of "windmilling" ....

Nah!
It's too gory for the internet

Will a shot of real blood on one of his guitars do?

You're better off uploading your pics to Photobucket or similar, and then linking to them.
