When Mr. Fender designed the guitars, the pro-nature ideology was not exactly mainstream...

These pics & the peek inside they give are great, but I'm somewhat torn seeing that pic#2.
A real pro (I want to say wizard) like Mr. Cruz spends his time relicing guitars, instead of maybe creating a new Omnicaster..?

The whole point is that the Stratocaster is an Icon. Those Relic models are what people want and they get a superb model from John Cruz and his colleagues.

They are Pro's and they are, by definition, paid for their expertise.

If paying customers wanted the "New Omnicaster" or Closet Classic versions of the Strat, then you better believe, that's what they'd be making.

I'd like to know what the sales ranks of the various models are.

Don't be offended on behalf of Fender - I confess I never got the idea behind 'relic', since time takes care of that anyway.

But BTW, how long has it been since Fender came up with a really new model..?

I did sound kinda Dogmatic didn't I?

The problem with Urethane type finishes is they don't wear softly, they scuff and crack. Time will not create what we think of as a beautiful relic.

I bought a Highway One body with Nitro finish to do my Relic build. That *may* be out of my system now. :D

This is an interesting Fender Tech article on finishes:

As for new products, the Pawn Shop Series as recently as 2013:

That's as new as Fender gets, there are a LOT of other guitar manufacturers trying to invent the "Next Strat"!

FMIC has sure pissed away a lot of R&D money trying to re-invent the Fender Amp......all of it for naught IMO.

Yeah a big thanks for posting. I have always found it interesting how they make guitars and the insight these kind of pics/stories have and info it helps in deciphering the processes used.

I have gone to the Corvette Factory in Bowling Green Kentucky to watch them build Vettes and it is pretty amazing...unfortunately GM doesn't allow pictures to be taken!

The Corvette factory sounds cool, can you play with some of the finished ones?

Yep...as long as you plunk down the $$ for your very own. I did lay a bit of rubber in thier parking lot with my Vette, but I think they expect that there
