A few interesting pictures from the Associated Press' Stratocaster 60th Anniversary spread.

Now that's a guitar workshop! Ken Maas final setup in player position (note the cool headstock rest)

I don't know, I've got more than ever.

Seriously though, it shows how many variations are on "file". Not that just anyone can get their preference.

I found it interesting to see the necks stacked like...well...boards!! :D
(note the handle at the end of the headstock)

I thought they were made by elves and fairies afterhours, while the luthier slept.

Thank You, you're very welcome, I thought the same.

All credit belongs to Associated Press, meaning they are published in a Newspaper near you.

I wanted these to be part of our archive and I for one have bookmarked this post.

Yeah a big thanks for posting. I have always found it interesting how they make guitars and the insight these kind of pics/stories have and info it helps in deciphering the processes used.

I have gone to the Corvette Factory in Bowling Green Kentucky to watch them build Vettes and it is pretty amazing...unfortunately GM doesn't allow pictures to be taken!

The Corvette factory sounds cool, can you play with some of the finished ones?

One final bit, the Fender "Making of a Stratocaster" video, an interesting 6:06.

Love how the headstocks fit together to not waste wood if they're cut from the same piece. Another testament to Leo's genius.

An interesting thought and no doubting Leo but if you do not mind me saying I think the headstocks start off rectangular and the shaping comes later.
I could always be wrong though and have been before... :D
The stack of maple at the front are for necks.
Nice idea though! :D

I'm thinking you're both right, in a way. The design looks like something Leo would create for economical use of material, but the reality demanded different manufacturing parameters.

I like this explanation by Jol Dantzig (co-founder of Hamer Guitars) in Premier Guitar
http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/20484-esoterica-electrica-the-incredibly-smart-and-simple-strat

"Every aspect of this instrument was agonizingly scrutinized for ease of manufacture, and I don’t believe it has ever been bested.

As we observe our specimen from headstock to output jack, there are no wasted opportunities for corner cutting because every shortcut has been anticipated.

The neck is made from a single piece of 1" flatsawn maple—a material that is plentiful, cheap, and extremely durable. The bottom surface of the board is both the back of the headstock and the heel of the neck. This means that a shaper knife or router needs only to be run on the shaft of the neck to bring it to final shape. And instead of pitching the headstock backwards as on classical instruments, the necessary downward string pressure is accomplished by removing half of the material on the front of the peghead area.

A slot for the truss rod is routed down the center of the back of the board. There is a simple hole at each end and no need for a truss rod cover. Instead of a platform for the nut, a simple slot does just fine. The individual necks are easy to maneuver in the spray booth and a breeze to buff. At the assembly stage, the six-on-a-side configuration is beneficial in that an inventory of identical tuners can be held instead of two sets, as on three-on-a-side designs. Handy.

That makes sense. It could save money to cut them that way but it's probably more efficient and realistic to cut them from the boards as shown in the photo.
