You are a true man of taste, Arjay. That is my dream amp. If the stars were in line, I would sooner purchase a '63/'64 Vibroverb than a pre-cbs strat.

A Vibroverb will make any guitar shine.

I know they might not exude the legendary mojo of an original, but the custom re-issue blackface Vibroverb sounds mighty damn good. With a few modest tweaks, it would put you within arm's reach of sonic Shangri-La. They still turn up periodically on the secondary market at less than half the price of the vintage amp......

The vast majority of my playing is done with a sparkly clear Strat tone. Nothing beats that for recording, it's so easy to make it sit well in a mix. Sure, I'll play with some overdrive for a lead part but I've never been a fan of the super-saturated distortion sound for rhythm parts.

Inexperienced players pile on the distortion thinking it adds "power" to their sound. What they don't realise is that the feeling of "power" in a guitar sound comes from dynamics, most of which are lost when the amp is pushed into heavily compressed distortion. Those flattened peaks may be full of harmonics but the trade off is the loss of dynamic range.

Of course, if you really want dynamic range then you play an acoustic. but that's another argument entirely.

Thank you. I let my restored SR go a while back. I wasn't convinced the 10L6's were the greatest (not to mention the size was a bit difficult to transport), but gained a pretty good idea of how good a blackface platform with a quality 15 inch speaker would sound. A Custom Vibroverb might fit the bill. I'll be keeping a sharp eye!
