Ok, brand new here. Found the site a week ago. 62 years old and always had a guitar of some sort lurking around. Didn't do much with it/them. But, in Dec. my wife got me this Keith Urban guitar package for my birthday. Cute but, this lead to a guitar repair guy to dial it in along with a newly purchased Gibson ES139 I bought 3 weeks after which lead to a purchase of a Fender Blues III amp which lead to a purchase of a Fender Strat 1996 MIJ with Tom Short PUPs which lead to guitar lessons which lead me to lurk around the new (for me) wonderful world of Fender guitars and upgrades which lead me to buy a Lindy Fralin prewired pickguard to see if it will fit a Fender Squire I've had for a few years. Phew, a lot has happened in 5 months.

I haven't been to a guitar shop/store in years. I stepped in the Guitar Center in December and it went downhill/uphill from there.

So, I'm easily obsessed and now...I'm obsessed.

Question, any suggestion what would be a good Fender Strat for the money to drop this pickguard into? Any year MIA, MIM or MIJ I don't care. Just a good foundation. Might as well strike while the obsession is in place.

Thanks for having me and welcome your opinions.

Tom

Hey Snegrah, welcome to the forums.

I feel your pain, I caught GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) at the ripe age of 59 and over the last 5 years, I've been through 22 (or so) guitars since.

As to your question, there are a few ways you can put that Loaded Pickguard to use:

1) Send it to Me, sell all the rest for whatever you can get and spend the rest of your life telling people with incipient GAS that you've felt the heat and seen the flames of Hell?!

2) Send it to me and don't even bother with the rest of my advice, if you can sleep at night, :D

3) Buy good used parts on ebay and build your perfect guitar, :?

4) Go to http://www.warmoth.com/ and Damn your Immortal Soul to the Fire.

There are plenty more but those should provide plenty of fodder and give your spiritual counselor pause to reflect on the blasphemy of Rock.....and.......Roll! :?:

danagos,

Are you kidding me - WARMOTH??? Some very serious mind/wallet involvement there. Maybe I shouldn't have started down this path. I may just give you everything and stay with my old car hot rod and two channel stereo hobbies. Both have the same GAS for me.

Well....again, maybe I'll just find a place to land this pickguard into a Warmoth and call it a day. Just ONE. Sure......

Last night I bought an American Special Standard HSS...just because I wanted ONE MIA. Beautiful shape. However, I think it needs to be dialed in as it doesn't have the same "quality" sound the the 1996 MIJ w/ Tom Short PUPs I had recently acquired. So, I'm taking it to the fellow who dialed in the MIJ and see what he can do with it. I hear some string/fret buzzing and the intonation is slightly off.

No, I don't sleep well to begin with and now I try to count Strats instead of sheep.

Gotta' run, Warmoth is calling.

Thanks for the welcome and I'll give you the name of my therapist when I find one. I know I'll need one soon.

BTW, nice place to lurk and learn from.

T.

G A S - I love it. I can now tell my wife that I have a new condition! I turned 63 in December and had started playing guitar two years ago. My very first guitar was an acoustic that I got for $25. I then bought my first electric guitar, a Jackson dinky shuriken HSS and a small 5-watt practice amp. I brought that home and had fun!

Wasn't too happy with the sound of the Jackson after awhile, then I wanted to build a kit guitar, but that didn't pan out as they seemed more expensive/inferior quality than a used guitar, just so I ended up getting my first Fender; an early 90's MIM, black with maple fretboard. Did my own setup on this - the internet is my friend.

Then a buddy gave me an electric guitar he pulled out of a dumpster with the intent of rebuilding, but never got to it. It is a Burswood (my research on the guitar showed all comments started with the word 'junk') that is the same color scheme as my MIM strat. I took it apart, sanded the body to raw wood and painted it metalic blue using Duplicolor automotive lacquer paint with about 10 coats of clear lacquer. Put it all together, installed new strings, plugged it, and ............. nothing - no sound. Again, with the internet being my friend, found that the volume pot was no good. Found a basic switch/pot kit on ebay and rewired and, it worked. From this experience, I rewired the strat as the volume pot was a bit scratchy.

So, now I'm looking for my 5th guitar. I'm liking the thin bodied Ovation acoustic/electric's. Now that I know that I have GAS, I can justify the purchase with my wife.
LOL and not RIP!

xny1989,

"Birds of a feather flock together" GAS...yep have it. Last night I dropped that pickguard into a Fender Squire Affinity series Strat I had laying around and though it made a big difference it doesn't come close to my 96 MIJ. Must be the skinny body and type of wood used on the Squire? I also blocked the tremolo. So, I'm out looking for another GAS project.

Keep up the good work and chime back in with what you do or get.
