I've seen these on Ebay. They never seem to sell. Gee I wonder why?

I am a huge fan of the Select series. But these are just some of the worse looking guitars I have ever seen. This is how you take a wonderful piece of wood, and ruin it.

...and the large head stock is a double no no for me. Hideous

It's been that way with Fender for years. You win some, lose some. Please some of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but never all of the people all of the time. However, I don't know if PRS has ever come up with a serious loser.

I suppose these things you either like or hate.
Trends come and go .... birdseye, quilt, flame etc
They are definitely selling though so the comment these never sell is factually incorrect. :D

PRS has always had a '10' top. It's a kind of trademark offering of theirs and not a trend. I remember the 35th Anniversary Stratocaster. A take on the Strat Plus Ultra. It was a beautiful instrument. Paul Waller just completed a carved top Tele for NAMM. The construct of that guitar leads to its attractiveness. Something which would never shine as a conventional 'slab' of wood.

Sure ZZDoc I now what you mean with the PRS and I understand you like them they are great guitars but my point is like flared jeans what is popular today may be out of favour in years to come and vice versa.
Flame in wood has been around much like quilt but how many 50s 60s or even 70s guitars do you see with it?
Sure they do exist but not to the extent of some of the more recent years. :D
I met Paul Waller during a visitors tour of Fender and the shop what a great guy!
Are you referring to the thinline tele?

Not much flame in guitars in the '60s, but it really got popular in the late '70s.
Makers like Hamer and Dean lead the way, inspired by the '59 Les Paul 'Bursts.

The 35th Anniversary served as a template for the Ultra. It was essentially a souped-up Strat Plus with Silver Lace Sensors and switchable Elite circuitry.

I'm into function before form. The last Carvin I had built I could have gone with a carved top, and I agree it would have looked great, but I went with a Strat type slab top to save over a pound of weight. It weighs just 4 oz. more than my Thinline Tele, which is my lightest guitar. I'm happy with my choice. PRS has it's place, but it's not the only answer to the question. I think Fender should take a slice of their pie with new models, but some guitars I like to look at, other guitars I want to play. I really think this AAAAAA Flame business is getting way overdone.
