not a big fan of the ernie balls...dunno about anyone else but i don't seem to get the same sustain out of them or warmth for that matter that i get out of the daadarios.....sounds crazy or anyone else feel the same?

I agree,
DaAadrios are not only warm and sustain well, but they are very comfortable. I find the coated strings like Elixr or Cleartones very stiff even after the break in period

Ceri and DNA, thank you both again!

9-42, gottit. I was even poring through the manuals here online yesterday and couldn't find that info, and a google search on standard setup mostly brought back people's personal standard preferences, lol! :x

Yup there's a bazillion online places here to get strings, hence I wasn't too worried, though a whole pack of 9's would definitely be a good idea. Haven't heard of D'Addario before, will definitely seek some out.

Thanks again!

With 12 guitars now I'm looking for that peg winder than fits on to your cordless drill; and just spin those tuners right up; anybody seen this thing lately? It looks like a flat style winder with no handle.

Hi, man. Try this:

I just got done re-stringing my new USA strat. It took me 1/2 hour because I was being so careful to not scratch anything. I'm sure that will wear off after a while.

Wow... it takes me that much time *at least*! I'm sure I spend three times as much time as you did. I take all of the strings off and give the guitar a good cleaning. Since I set my bridge to float I basicly need to do a fresh setup after every restringing. After I install the new strings I check everything; neck relief, saddle height and intonation, pickup height and balance.

This tool is one of my favorite: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Measu ... Gauge.html

This measuring tool along with a capo and a set of Feeler Gauges that you can by at any auto shop for under $8.00 are indispensible for Strat players.

Over the course of the next few following days I check and recheck my setup as the strings stretch out and things seat down. I play a lot so my strings seems to go dead in 3 to 4 weeks average. I use Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys (10-46) which I've been using since the '70s. I don't blame you for being cautious though... an American made Strat is a premium instrument... one of the best of the best guitars in the world.

Yeah, 1/2 hour is really not all that long. I usually spend the better part of an hour to do it because I also give her a good cleaning.

Heres a laugher. When I was changing my high e string, i got done doing it and realized i forget to run it through the tree. I go to fix it and the string snaps back and hits me in the face (i was pretty close to it to make sure i did it right, don't ask), my cat happened to be right behind my left leg, so i tripped over her, hit my head on the corner of my TV and landed iwth my ribs on the leg of my rolling chair.

I just stayed on the ground for a good five minutes like "damn. my guitar just owned me."

i have locking tuners
but I haven't changed the strings on them yet.

I am going to venture into doing that later tonight, hopefully it won't take me too long.

Anyone got any experienced advice? I've been told it's a good idea to tune half a step higher and then tune down with the locking tuners.
