Interestingly, after reading & participating in paris' posts recently regarding 70's Strats and Vintage Instruments as Investments, I came across this ebay auction for a '77 Strat from the UK.

I've never played one, so I can't say anything about that. Just read the negative remarks, over and over, about the CBS tenure and cost cutting and quality decline. Will that ever go away?

Anyway, the seller is asking a minimum of 1,750 GBP ($2,931) and it's in decent nick (as might be said over there).

I wouldn't give a quarter of that amount for it, no love here for Big Head(stock) & 3 bolt necks, but it might be a great guitar, quien sabe?

Your restraint is well placed.

It looks great, really. Ashtray and all. It doesn't seem like it was played much over the decades. But with one of those you really need to feel and play it before making a decision. There are a lot of dogs from those years out there. I like mine, but I know there are others out there that are bad.

I think the price is a bit high, and I'd never consider it an investment. I can't say if 70s Strats have topped out, but I can't see a lot of growth. Buy the guitar if you want to play it...but I'd still recommend playing it before buying it.

Cheers.

Edsels worth money? Honestly never played one from that era that I'd pay more than I could buy a new squirt for.

In North America market it is too expensive , in your country I don't know . I don't think it is a good investment at this price .

I think the asking price is a skosh over-optimistic but in all fairness the guitar is a remarkably well-preserved example. I see about $2500 there, no more.

I agree. Old doesn't mean good. I've played some '70s Strat were terrible. Definately need to play it before you buy it. I'm going to say this, and I know people are going to disagree with me, but...I've found that Fenders and Gibsons from the '70s that look mint shape usually stayed in the case, and ones that look well used were well loved and played all the time. Clapton said in an interview that he preferred necks that had wear because it mean they were beloved and good sounding guitars.

As to the price, my price guide (not the rule according to Hoyle) prices these guitars anywhere from $1,900 to $2,400 for samples in exellent condition. I had a '77 hardtail that sounded terrible. I baught it from a website and had it mailed to me. Paid: $750, was later sold 3 years later for $1,400.

It's beautiful, but I'd want to play it.

Other than the black plastic, it looks nice.
It could be a good deal in the UK.

Yeah, that's why I waited until the 2000s to buy a new Strat after I bought my first in 1976 (shown below). I also didn't like the serial numbers on the headstock.
