Do you like really thin or really chunky necks?

Bear in mind that there have been three incarnations of the Van Halen 'Wolfgang': Peavy, Ernie Ball, and EVH. I cannot speak to the knowledge that the neck carve on each of these models is the same, nor does the diagram speak to which of the three it represents. For another assessment on the Wolfgang necks, go to:

http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=95572

Reading down the thread, you'll find some specs. You should be able to compare those to what you find on the Warmoth website. Suggest you find a dealer who has an EVH model guitar to audition.
As far as used examples of the Peavy and EB models, that would be catch as catch can.

I like a little heft. The modern C on my Am Dlx is fine, but when I play something with a little more bulk, I like it. My friend has a '57 Tele that I like a lot. It feels like a U or D shape.
The asymmetrical shape of the Wolfgang sounded interesting.
On the other hand, I'm not crazy about the V neck on my Clapton. Did I just say that out loud? I know it's blasphemy but what can I say. I'm not sure if the Wolfgang would feel like a V or not.

The Clapton neck is not representative of the Fender generic V neck. It is a tad more slender and its design has been attributed to both the necks on a favorite Martin acoustic guitar of his as well as the worn V-neck of his old Strat. For necks with 'heft' seek out the American Standard V neck, Deluxe V neck, or 60th Anniv Classic Player, American Vintage '56 which has the heavier 1056 neck, or an Eric Johnson model. The American Vintage '59 and the new Vintage Hotrod 50's have D necks. You might even like the neck on the now D/C'd '57 Vintage Hot Rod. There are still a few of these around. The Wolfgang neck ought not to be as hefty as these. Find an EVH Wolfgang for comparison.

Thanks for the options Doc. I think finding an EVH Wolfgang might be the quickest way to eliminate, or choose that option.

Only if you're willing to accept that as representative of the model, bearing in mind that there were 3 separate renditions of the guitar, each designed by the artist with a different manufacturer and each having a different neck spec. You might consider a call to Warmoth to ask which of the three their neck represents.

The Martin dreadnought flat-top which served as a template for the slender V neck profile was a 000-28 from 1974, which Clapton particularly liked playing and used it as his main acoustic during the 70s and later. It ended up being sold on an auction.

I'm going to keep my eye open for one of these. I'd like to check that neck out.
