I own a '76 and '79 Strat, yet both have very different neck shapes. The '76 has a really round fat neck compared to the '79 Strat, which is remarkably slim.

Can anyone tell me more about this these neck shapes and what they are called?

Maybe this will help - can't make any more specific suggestions based on the model year only.

Google, neck profiles

By 79 the 'widdly widdly' hair metal brigade were coming, maybe that's the case for thin necks haha.

Widdly widdly is my description of players who played lightning quick but seemed to forget about pleasing the ears ;-)

I've heard about the U shape necks and the C profiles... I've played various guitars from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. None of which where what I expected. Not a good or bad thing, just not what I expected.

A.R.Duchossoir's book on the Stratocaster explains:" By 1969, both flatter or rounder profiles were produced, depending upon the employee and the production schedule. At any rate, variances in the back profile are at their peak during the 70's." He offers a list of neck specs assembled by John Page. If you supply the serial numbers I'll see if there's a fit, should you not own the book.

That's an excellent and useful reference which many of us are familiar with. To reitterate, I recommend the section in Duchossoir's book from the standpoint of the photos which demonstrate the variations in headstock shape, extension and finish. As well, his observation that the variations in the shape of the backs of the necks during the 70's were likely a reflection of inconsistency amongst operators. Bear in mind that this was the 'CBS throwing the company under the bus' period. He follows with an observation that increased mechanization, beginning with the Zuckerman carving machine in '81, has led to better consistency. One can only assume that since the book's appearance in 1988, further improvements have been made.

There's a master neck blank board in the Fender factory which has been seen on several of the videos of that operation. Each blank is marked for a particular model and they are many. So the themes and variations within the line go way beyond those basic 6.

Hardly what OP is asking for, but these are the Warmoth neck shapes:

They're a bit more detailed in that they provide not only the thickness front to back, but the cross-sectional symmetry. I remember playing a Wolfgang and noting how comfortable it was because of that assymmetry. I did not care for the Fender SRV, though. That 'boatneck' may likely be the Fender 1056 which can be found on the new '56 American Vintage, if anyone cares to try one on. It's a biggie. What's missing here are the widths at the nut which the posting of the Fender essay provided a brief discussion of.

Ouch!! Just realized that Mordor is 16 hours ahead of us. Sweet dreams, mate :!:

I've got a Warmoth neck on my Stratocaster, I used the boatneck for mine, but also used the widest neck width, which made it nearly impossible to play after a while. Really hurt my palms when digging it. Ended up sanding it down a bit, but its still thicker than an SRV neck. My new PRS S2 has the same .835" at the first fret and I can say, it feels thin to me. I think the best shape is a '59...

I'm going to be ordering a Warmouth neck soon. I'm choosing between the Wolfgang and '59 Roundback. Has anyone used the Wolfgang?
