I made them very, very loose and gently worked it out by sliding it carefully. The pic here was taken right before I attempted to replace the loaded guard after installing the Kinman gear onto it. The attempt was unsuccessful due to the depth of the PCB on the switch and the strings were removed from the tuners prior to reassembly.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Got my first dimarzio area set in 2008. It was a 58n, 67m, 61b set. Since then I have tried several other DiMarzio noiseless singles, and experimented with positions, tone pot values and cap values. Needless to say I have done a lot of soldering. Have tried area 67,58,61, heavy blues, heavy blues 2, blues, chopper, and virtual solo. I have come to some conclusions:

- the area 67 is an incredible neck pickup - bright, fat, and woody - just amazing - i now have 4 guitars with a 67 in the neck - it needs a 250k vol and tone to sound best IMO

- the area 67 is way too bright to be a usable middle pickup and the 61 and hotter others above are dark in the middle - the 58 is the most stratty in this position and gives a really good texas blues sound - this sounds best without a tone pot load though, and gives way more quack this way in the 2/4 positions

- the virtual solo is the best bridge pickup, or at least my favorite - its like a hot strat bridge pickup - bright but not too bright, quacks good with the middle and pushes the amp a little harder - almost like a p-90 but still like a strat - not like a humbucker at all - this sounds best with a tone pot attached

so, in conclusion my favorite setup is: area 67n, 58m, virtual solo bridge with jimmy vaughan wiring - no tone pot load on the middle - both 250k comtrols with .022 cap

another thing, they are height sensitive but it is baloney that the tone changes with the heights - just the volume (it may change gain so it seems different but not tone) - best heights are 4/64 high e side and 6/64 low e side measured with strings depressed at 21st (not 22nd) fret

just to give my experience - i have 2 strats with this setup - tone is about same outputs as the texas special set and has better tone than the cruz pickups in my custom deluxe - changed them out to these

Nice write up. I now have all of my parts and will start assembling my Warmouth partscaster soon. I have a loaded pick guard with Fat 50's ready to go into it. DiMarzio's experimenting may be soon after. I'm planning on wiring my output jack with quick connects so I can swap loaded pick guards in and out as a hobby. :)

Think about all that $$$ you'll save on solder.

You might even (dare I say it?) buy another guitar with the money......

You can't argue with logic. Well, actually my wife can, but I think she's Klingon! :)
