My set up is only a 30 watt mx30fx marshall amp, a 1960s replica reissue strat, no modifications. Plus a dunlop wah wah pedal. I just feel the tone isnt that soft or sweet, and when i have it heavy it just blurs, any ideas on amp settings or any tips, im going for an overdriven sound, something that sounds good in most rifs, eg guns and roses style but can also do heavy riffs and solos.....thanks in advance Been playing for 3-4 years, but totallys elf taught..... :D so prob not a touch on most of you :)

Heres a link to the guitar: http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0131000302

Next time you're in a music shop ask to demo a proper tube/valve driven Marshall. It would also be perfectly reasonable to ask to try a solid state Marshall like yours right along side it. Just see what you think of the difference. You may find you've begun to identify the problem.

I have a Marshall 100w Triple Super Lead. I also have an AVT100 with the single pre-amp valve as a practice amp, and a couple of different sized MGs. The latter, it has to be said, are pretty crappy, though dollar for dollar no more so than anyone else's cheapies. The AVT is really not bad - until you A/B it next to the TSL. Ohmygod: then it's like choosing between an Aston Martin and a Model T-Ford.

Get yourself some tubes, my friend.

Now I'll make way for all our esteemed colleagues to tell you why they feel you need a Blues Junior...

Cheers

I've found that if your sound is getting muddy, you're probably using a bit too much OD. Try backing off on the gain some so you can hear the individual strings.

Man that's great advice! I wish we could have a tone workshop here; pictures or diagrams of tone setups on the more popular amps or even the unpopular ones!
You might try a tube screamer if the advice fro the other guys doesn't get you where you want to be; they are pretty nice; cheaper than a new or another ampo would be.
I have a friend that used one througha solid state amp and true to it's name his sound was a screamer! Full rich saturated tube tone (for a solid state setup) ... I liked it and I am a dyed in the wool tube man.

To be honest with you guys I don't know much about tone settings other than you can get a wide variety of tone using your bass, middle and treble controls; the presence, the EQ (if you have one) and any tone shift buttons you may have. for the non marshall crowd marshalls (at least mine does) have a couple little tiny buttons that make a BIG difference in tone.
How to match so and so's tome is probably a trial and error thing and I have had LOTS of error and trials! I just dial in what sounds cool at the moment but usually don't move them till I read some thing about say Bad Company (fab Marashall tone!) or the like.

I guess he doesn't like your amp. Seem's a bit harsh to me.

Well I don't have a "MG" anything; I was curious about what he was reffering to... seems we have a real rash of rudeness here these days... too bad.

Sorry, wasn't being rude, just a little goofy. But, those MG amps are not known for their great tone. Don't expect it to sound like a boutique tube amp. Not saying you are, but there are so many people with nice guitars and bad amps and they soak money into their guitar wondering what the problem is.

Well you can't expect race car results when you put bycycle tires on your Diablo; why should you expect anything different when you run your reasonably priced Fender through a $200.00 amp?
We had a guy bad mouthing others Pride and Joy(musical instruments and such) in a great thread that I think got deleted...he ran into a huge buzz saw....

well really for now a new amp is not really a possibility as im off to uni for 4 years soon lmao, so i guess il have to put up wquth it and see about a new setup after then.......... ve also fiddled with the settings and tried them out and ive recently got a softer but deeper sound which is also rather bright, with a bit of reverb shoved in, not to bad really

i have 2 Marshall 1982 JCM800'S half stacks and a Marshall MG 100HDFX half stack the MG sits right in the middle of my 800's and you would never know the differnce between them when all 3 are going at once.
my point go with the Marshall MG 100HDFX its a great amp.
