Hi everybody.
Just engaged in a trade with a local musician who used to live and perform in Austin, TX.

He said he received this strat from Tommy Shannon of SRV and double trouble fame.

The story says that he knew him when he lived in Austin, and that this guy worked at a music store that Tommy owned.

When this guy moved to Denver more than 20 years ago, Tommy said he could have his pick of strats from his collection.

he chose this one.

It's obviously well played, but a few things are amiss from the start.
He got rid of the 1957 neck and put on a mighty mite Fender neck which si AWESOME, I might add. Wide and flat, baby! And MAPLE!

Also, you will notice that the pickups are not stock. It has two 30 years old hotrails and an SCN noiseless in the neck. It has a five positoin switch instead of 3. and the scratch plate is obviously all parts.

Now, on to the good stuff...the neck joint looks like a 1960 fender strat.
The surf green is over red or burst or something...it's peeking through the natural relic.
The clear coat is checking and you can see the yellow tint on top of the aweseom surf green!
I'm digging this strat!
The trem block was replaced because the original was rusted out.
The serial number on the neck plate is 49587.

Now...I would like to get it back to 1960 specs, IF the body is legit. However, one of the stamps has me wondering if it's a foreign lawsuit type of guitar.

I'm hoping I can get some help here.

Here's the pix:

My initial impression of what I see is: Uh... No...

But... I'm FAR from all things Stratocaster, so I'll be very interested to see what some of our 'experts' have to say...

Still... all-in-all... looks like one sick Strat !! :D

cheers!

Assuming for a moment that the body is genuine Fender (not a foregone conclusion at this point), how you gonna replace wood that's been crudely routed from the control cavity? I am not seeing the customary nail holes in the top of the body, used during the '50s, '60s, and '70s as an aid to applying the finish. If they're not present then the body is not a vintage Strat part, period.

Frankly, I don't see any "there" there. Put it back together, play it, and enjoy it for what it is -- a partscaster assembled with parts of dubious origin.

Yeah, I see nothing but a very questionable story, poor pictures, and nothing even remotely "vintage Fender" at all. If this guitar was the "pick of the collection" it must have been a seriously sorry collection.

Apparently Fender bodies often had pin holes that were made during the building process. I've marked one them out in the photo. Here's where I found that info: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/strat54.html

Kind of looks like the innards of a tokai, as far as lettering and font goes:

Found a better pic earlier, but don't knwo where it was:

I would venture to say, Nothing on that guitar came from the Fender factory except for the headstock logo and I find it hard to believe even that was a Fender original, most likely gotten off FleBay.

I knew the neck wasn't fender....it was a mighty mite.
It's actually a very solid neck with great playability.

I just want to find out what the body is is and from whence it came.

horax, yes, you figured out that it's a Japanese body (Tokai, decent quality).

I like how the guy/company that refinished the guitar put his/their stamp on it, though
I can't quite read it: "A MABTTROK FINISH" ???

That "routing" wasn't very clean, was it?

Ha!
Yep, that is a selling piont, isn't it?

I think that route might have been for a humbucker or p90 at one point that went awry. ;)

The only part of the guitar that I'm certain is Fender are the pickups. The body looks aftermarket. If you look at the neck pocket, it has a very modern route. Vintage Fenders do not have the little "hump" at the base. The modern ones do, but not quite like that.

I'm thinking parts-o-caster. Having said that, if it plays well and you like it, buy it. But don't pay more than what the parts are worth. Go online and find out how much it would cast in parts to build and make that the price.
