I have a '99 all-stock American Deluxe HSS that plays beautifully. But I've never been crazy about the pickups (two Vintage Noiseless and a DH-1 humbucker) and it's finally time to do something about it.

I'm planning to switch out all of the electronics for a SSS configuration. I have some CS 69's on the way and am going to wire up a new pickguard from scratch to keep the old one stock.

I'd like to do a blender pot and a master tone control. From what I've read, I'll want a reverse-audio (C) taper for the blend pot and will have to make it no-load myself by scraping off the carbon at the "0" end of the pot's rotation. This way at 10 it'll be all the way in the circuit, at 1 it'll be barely there, and at 0 it'll be completely disconnected.

Question is, should I wire it to blend in the bridge pickup or the neck pickup? Or, is there a way to wire the switch so that on positions 1/2/3 it blends the neck pickup, and on 4/5 it blends the bridge? Or something else?

Then, the plan is to use a standard no-load tone pot and wire it as a master tone for all three pickups. Is the no-load thing a good idea? And what value of capacitor should I use for it now that it's controlling all three pickups?

cs69's are fantastic. i set my black mim strat up to be my "blackie" strat and sound like eric's original because there was gray bottom pups in there. well, 69's were the answer.those and a .1uf pio cap. some of the best pups i have. good choice on the pups. sorry but i have no experiance with a blender pot.i'm a traditional type guy' and the louder the better.

The Acme/Fralin Blender Pot, as wired on my Strat, will blend the Neck pickup into switch positions 1 & 2 and the Bridge into positions 4 & 5. Position 3 remains solely the Middle pickup. Of course in positions 2 & 4 you're adding the Middle Pickup.

With the Fralin Blender Pot & wiring, when the Pot is turned fully clockwise there is no blend, just standard Strat switching for Pickup selection. Then you "blend" in the alternate Pickup as you turn counter-clockwise.

It's a very simple wiring scheme as shown below. I believe the "Volume Kit" shown in the Fralin diagram is a treble bleed kit.

I turned the Master Tone (I used a TBX) around to face the Volume Pot, for simplicity.

Hope this helps.

Yep, I was looking to take it one step further since the standard way of doing it seemed counterintuitive (turning the control down to increase the blend). It's a little trickier since reverse-taper no-load pots don't exist, but I've done pot surgery a few times before and it should be pretty simple to make my own. From searching these forums, this seems to be the way that Martian does it.
