Hi, I bought this guitar recently on eBay, I have read on some of the forums, about a model that some describe as a Japanese "62 re-issue" from the 1980's, others reckon that there was no official Japanese Fender re-issue during the 80's, is this the model of guitar that they are referring to ?
The serial number is : E958344. Neck plate stamped - FENDER.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers Brian.

The guitar seems to be precisely as advertised -- a '62 Strat re-issue built by Fuji-Gen in the mid '80s.

Congratulations -- these are among the very finest Fender-Japan instruments ever made.

Rawk on!

Thanks very much for the replies !
Would anyone have any idea of what these models sell for normally as it seems to be a remarkably good guitar for the money paid, I won the eBay auction with the UK equivalent of about €350 ( £210 ). The guitar is in beautiful condition with virtually no apparent fret wear, doesn't look like it's seen much use ( so far ) and it plays superbly.
Can't see me ever parting with this one !

That is a tiny amount of money for that guitar. I've just been posting about my 80's Japanese 62 custom tele in the tele forum. I reckon you paid a 1/3rd of the price it should have been, if that!

+1

Here in the colonies, such a guitar would command $675 to $750.

Ya done good, kid!

As pointed out, the real deal and a great guitar. I have found out that about 90% of these i have picked up (I have owned quite a number of both MIJ/CIJ Strats and Teles) I had to do a setup on them. Adjusting the truss rod is a bit of a pain and most of the 1980s Strats come with a paper shim under the neck to raise the heel a bit. That does help! but went set up properly, wow! Great playing guitar and worth the money! Good score!

Hi, thanks very much for all of the replies !
It's great to tap into all this knowledge.
I took the neck off tonight and here are some photos of the codes. I've read that the E serial numbers were produced between 1984 - 87, but the neck looks like it says 3/8/1989, could that be right ?
Any help would be great, cheers Brian.

Looks totally untouched and unmolested.

I wouldn't worry too much about the seeming discrepancy of the neck's date.

How does it play and sound?

I put a small shim under the heel of the neck and re-set the action and it plays beautifully unplugged, through the amp there is a slight background hum but the pickups sound really nice, cheers Brian.

Some hum is to be expected with traditional single-coil pickups. A full-size aluminum shield (Fender P/N 0019699000) installed beneath the pickguard may help.
