Hello forum. I came across this used 2012 deluxe strat in a Guitar Center in Manhattan a week ago.
I had been wanting a Strat for a long time and this one was running for $850 plus taxes with the hardshell case included and was in pretty good condition. I played a while with it in two ocassions and liked it and considering the new ones go for $1400 or so I decided to purchase it since it was a pretty good deal IMO.

Anyway, I came back home and set it up and saw a couple things that threw me off a little bit (sorry for my english but I think that's the correct expression). I uploaded a few pictures for you to see and hopefully tell me if it's a knockoff, a partscaster or a fake (I honestly don't know how much Guitar Center inspects the guitars before buying them to re-sell).

I know pretty much nothing about identifying strats but for example the wiring looks like a mess to me. There's also bar codes in the body which I'm pretty sure never saw before in other Fender bodies (there's always a stamp or something with the date but never a barcode?).

Here is the album link to the images. Hopefully you can enlighten me a bit  Thank you in advance and sorry for the bad english. Let me know if you'd like any more pictures of a particular part of the guitar.

I'm not sure that's a Deluxe neck. It doesn't have the abalone dot markers.

You mean on the sides? It's got the dots. Must be not visible in the pictures.

What about the rest of the stuff?

The body and pickups seem correct as does the hardware however the neck does not look like a Deluxe neck to me. As mentioned, those dot markers just look like solid white dots rather than the textured perloid dots found on a deluxe.

In addition, the Fender logo on a deluxe is generally a shiny metallic logo rather than the standard black/white logo found on other models. Additionally, on deluxes, "Made In USA" is printed on the back of the headstock with the S/N and not on the front. (At least on mine).

My American Deluxe also doesn't have the "Original Contour Body" logo on the headstock.

The headstock and neck (minus the locking tuners) looks like an American Standard. The body looks like an American Deluxe though.

Maybe an Am Deluxe body, but the rest....? The logo on the headstock is wrong for an Am Deluxe, it looks more like an Am Std neck with Deluxe tuners. The bridge block looks like a Squier block, although it could be the picture.

I will have to check the headstock to confirm on the logo.

How can I tell about the bridge? I don't want to become too paranoic about it but I can't help to feel disappointed given I bought it through an actual store and not from a random guy on ebay..

Fender went from abalone to perloid on the deluxe necks but as others have suggested this does not apper to be a deluxe neck.
The bar codes on the body are expected. Possibly deluxe two tone sunburst v neck body.
Send the serial to consumerrelations@fender.com to find out more but I expect you will be disappointed I'm sorry. :D

I'm inclined to agree with jimmyjames - loaded American Deluxe body with an American Standard neck. It's an easy job to swap in the locking tuners - I did the job on my American Standard during a string change. If the body originally came from a V-neck then maybe the owner didn't like the neck and swapped it out.

Definitely send the serial number to Fender; they can tell you what the neck was from when it shipped out.

Do you think the bridge is from a Squier too? Does it look wrong? I can provide more pictures if you need.

Can they check the body bar codes against the neck aswell to confirm the swap?

Most of the clowns working at a GC know less about what they sell than the average forum member here. Due diligence to establish an instrument's bonafides should be done before a purchase when there is some question regarding authenticity.

There was a suggestion about the bridge block but it could be just the light and angle of the shot.
If it takes the pop in whammy and has two grub screws and a slot on the block where the bar fits then it is most likely a deluxe.
If the neck has been swapped it will have been done by a third party. You can buy fullly loaded bodies on ebay.
The neck serial will tell the original model when it left the factory.
It may have a barcode on it but this would require removal of the neck and this could tell you the model it came from... assuming the barcode has not been removed.
If you purchased it and it was labelled as a deluxe do nothing more since you could damage it removing the neck.
As suggested email Fender and if the neck is from another guitar take it back.
Hope this helps :D

I see that. When did that happen?

Do they still use the "D" in Deluxe's serial number?

The "foil" logo is still a Deluxe feature, which is the kiss of death for this neck.

Well I guess the neck definitely is not a deluxe neck then. Is it incompatible with a deluxe body in any way that I haven't noticed yet?

And here's a closeup of the bridge. What do you think?

I agree should have the foil logo.
Abalone dropped around 2010 which is a shame it looked nice especially with the tinted v neck maple and I think the D for deluxe was dropped soon after... :D
The bridge front looks deluxe .... it was more the block on the back but probably just the photo.
Check for the items I mentioned you should be just able to see them.
Thinking further if you removed the neck and it had a fifth hole where a standard plate would screw thru then that would seal it.
I recommend you go no further though until you hear back from fender and talk to the dealer who sold you the guitar. :D

+1

That would be the clincher.
