I'd find an experienced Luthier and get it PLEK'd, even if you have to ship it to them. Compared to how well th guitar will play and how long you'll have it, it's well worth the cost.

Some of the Luthiers employing a PLEK machine on the West Coast are:

Westwood Music
1627 Westwood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90024

Brawer's Stringed Instrument Repair
15 Lafayette Street,
San Francisco, CA 94103

San Francisco Guitar Works
Contact person: Geoff Luttrell
323 Potrero Ave,
San Francisco, CA 94103

cheers!

After speaking with techs at 4 shops I've decided where I'm going. The Strat is being dropped off today after work. I'll post again when I get it back...

The Fender went in the shop today for some fret work. Fender is paying the shop to do it under warranty. The shop said it may take an extra day or two for the authorization, but I have other guitars to play...

Can never have too many guitars. Too many wives, perhaps. But never too many guitars. Unfortunately, one is often the cause of the other.

You got that right! Every time I see a nice guitar I want it. But how many can I play? It's like my record collection, I have well over 5000. So a record a day and it would still take me 13 years to listen to them all...but I still keep buying more!

As for wives I've only had one and she's put up with me for over 30 years so I guess she can over look some things.

I've never had the wives say I need more guitars. Mistresses are more supportive.

To all who have been following along I just wanted to update. I just picked up my Strat from Sam Ash and I must say the tech there did a fantastic job! All the frets are nice and smooth now. The guitar was completely set up and tuned when I picked it up. It plays like it should now and the action is as they say "Like Butter".

One of the great things about this guitar is the low weight. I have some serious cervical spine issues and this thing is very light and easy on my neck and shoulders.

Let me say I am one happy camper!

Chris

So happy to hear all the good reports. I was a bit nervous that these brand new guitars would end up having filed edges that showed that they had been worked on. Now lets hope there is no more rain so those frets do not grow some more! 8)

The rain would mean increased humidity, causing the frets to "unsprout", the wood swelling. I have had this happen, sharp fret ends that "disappeared" in the spring after the fist rains started. I know that in this next winter when the humidity drops, those same frets will "sprout" again, which will be the best time to file them. Until then, I can be like the grasshopper that didn't have to work all summer.

My Strat is back home in California about 35 miles from where it was born. I don't foresee anymore issues with swelling and shrinking of the wood, I've got my fingers crossed anyway!

As nice as it plays I may however wear out the fretboard...ha..ha

Oh, one other thing, the tech was quite surprised to see that Fender was paying for the fret work under warranty.

That tells you a lot about how Sam Ash, at least that store, treats repairs that should be done under warranty. 8)
