I am picking this up today. Let me address my thought process on this. Somewhere I read that when Fender replaces the neck they cannot put the serial number on it, like you cannot transfer serial numbers from car frame to car frame. this would kill any resale value.

Now there's an interesting observation because when the CS built a guitar for me, and I waited a year for it to arrive with the wrong neck carve, it went back to them for replacment with the shape originally requested, and came back, as such 6 mos later. There was no serial number on either neck. Just the Custom Shop logo. There was a V-series serial number on the neck plate for the guitar. It was the same with my Gilmour...and...by the way...for the red '87 Clapton prototype I purchased last fall which turned 27 last December. As far as that guitar goes, I received a PM from a Forum member who owns a brand new neck from that production run...never used. Both necks carry the original Custom Shop logo on the back of the headstock and, on the neck tail and end, the initials of the same employees who built them on the same day. John Page has coroborated the identity of one of the men who built the necks.
Now there's a bit of Fender trivia for ya!

So this is what was done. Filed and dressed frets, reattached loose tremolo spring, restring and set up, adjust trust rod, bridge height, and intonation. I compared this neck with a 2013 AM deluxe tele, and I am very happy with the result of the repair.

Glad to hear it worked out Ed. :D

Our local Guitar Center has this problem with many of their high end guitars. They hang the really good stuff on the highest rack to keep them out of the hands of people they don't deem as worthy to play such instruments. Unfortunately, this is where the dry heat is worse.

Yah....and then they sell the gear on the wall as new.

Glad to hear your fret job went well. My guitar is still siting here waiting my decision. zZounds has sent me a shipping label, but I'm still on the fence about sending it back. The free set up and new strings are a + if the tech I take it to is any good.

Chris

Hey sp8ctre, I got to wondering what the OP decided to do with his Am Dlx w/Fret Sprout-itis? :?:

It seems that edhdsn is pretty happy with the way his turned out. :D

Are you going to get a repair or exchange for (hopefully) a better one?

I really want to get it repaired because it's a fantastic guitar. But I'm having problems finding a shop. The recommended gold level tech never answers his phone or returns calls. Sam Ash and Guitar Center managers couldn't tell me if their techs were Fender certified when I called yesterday. I'm finding guitar techs keep odd hours. I'm calling both places back today since the techs will be working.

I looked at the 2 guitars of the same model I have now that zZounds has in stock and I like the one I have now much more.

I'll post again after I talk to someone who may actually be able to help...

Chris

LOL! I think guitar techs are often like computer nerds (I am both!) and keep weird hours, unless locked in by a music store for work. I often work on guitars at 12:00 -2:00am or sometimes other odd hours. Sure hope you get it fixed soon. Wishing you the best!

Persistence will pay off. The guitar techs are also hampered by having to deal with musicians, and you know what kind of hours they keep :!:

Keep us posted Chris and good luck. :D

I was finally able to speak with a tech at the nearest Guitar Center. He said to bring the guitar in and he would take care of it.

I looked at his profile on the web site and he just graduated Luthier school in June of 2013. Should I be concerned about that?

Hey Chris, I would be concerned with the level of experience of anybody who worked on my guitars and especially a Guitar Center Tech.

We have the same situation here on the East Coast. There's a school churning out techs by the dozens every couple of months and LOTS of them wind up at Guitar Centers. Some of them *may* be good some day.

That's a nice guitar, get the job done right by an experienced tech. :)

Are you too far away from edhdsn to use the same people?

2nd that.... a newbie guitar tech filing the edge of your fret board? Ummm. Think I would pass on that one. Or else talk with the guy and see if he has experience doing that, but I would doubt it.

If you voted for the candidate who presently sits behind the desk in the Oval Office, probably not  On the other hand, if you wouldn't want a newly minted medical student doing your heart transplant, you ought to be.

Well, not feeling confident about a newly graduated guitar tech I looked around at some other shops a little further away and I found this guy.

"I built my first instrument, an electric bass, in 1985, after being shown how to dress frets by Billy Sheehan. I was head of Research & Development at Steinberger Sound 1988-1990 where I worked directly with Ned Steinberger creating the prototypes of many of the Steinberger models."

I'm calling him this morning to see if he can do the work...

Chris

Give a shout to Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island. 718-981-8585.
Ask to speak to Stan Jay. Explain that you are calling to inquire about the credentials of reference given to you. You are considering using "X" to do some guitar repairs for you, and you were given to understand that Stan might know this person and be able to support 'X''s credentials.
