I dropped off my deluxe am strat as the local repair shop, they were surprised that Fender was paying to repair fret sprout. I will let you know how things come out with the repair. It seems that the frets are sealed after they are placed on the neck, and they cannot be resealed after they file them. Ed

Seems to me that if they're so damn surprised, and the therapy doesn't yield a perfect result, maybe they should recommend to the powers that be that they replace the damn neck with one cut from a fully cured blank.

Glad that you're getting some resolution.

I'd sure like to know what they mean by "sealed" and why the sealing process can't be repeated.

I would think that "sealing" meant applying finish, urethane or lacquer, which would take time and materials and when done after filing fret ends, have to be undetectably blended. Is the neck gonna get roughed up? Hope not!

If it was lacquer, it would blend into the original finish naturally, if urethane, more difficult.

I think he is simply meaning the finish on the neck is applied after the frets are installed. I have some guitars that were older but unplayed that had maple necks. There was finish on the side and even the tops of the frets when the finish was added. The Rosewood is masked off but the edges of the neck are coated. So when one files off the sproutiness of the frets the edges will be opened into the slots where the frets are and the luthier also risks scraping the finish on the edge of the neck. Please let us know what happened Ed. And it not to your satisfaction, send it back!

So you're thinking the factory dressed new fret ends before the finish was applied, right? That makes sense.

I agree, I've had finish over frets on Maple necks like you're describing ('03 Am Dlx) and created the same myself when I sanded & refinished the Jimmie Vaughan Maple Fretboard neck on my last build.

It's a lot easier to clean those frets when the finish is dry but still relatively fresh.

So, rather than "cannot reseal", as Ed was told, there is no need to "reseal" the frets.

Arrgghh, we need a full report Ed. :D

I think when the edges of the frets are dressed they will now be unsealed on the edges of the neck. if they are sticking out and are filed flat the finish will come off where every fret end is located. This means the little T shape of the fret on the edge of the fret board will be open due to the finish getting filed off. That is what happened when I fixed mine. If I bought a brand new guitar i would never allow them to try to fix it. I would send it back and get one that was done right from the beginning and was set up from the factory (as shoddy as that can be some times. My buddies who own music stores tell me that 80% of the guitars that come in have to be set up to play right. Ummmmm).

I am picking this up today. Let me address my thought process on this. Somewhere I read that when Fender replaces the neck they cannot put the serial number on it, like you cannot transfer serial numbers from car frame to car frame. this would kill any resale value. I felt that the fret spout problem, was a if not now/when item. Better to have the factory take care of it now, while the wood was dehydrated, rather than latter at my cost. The resealing thing is something I will address with Fender, just is case I have a lazy tec. Ed

OK, baby's home, tucked away in her case, great job, very happy. Not only did they correct the fret problem, they set up the guitar to Fender specs, and put a new set of strings on it, also fix another problem that I did not notice. I did remove the 3 packets of of desiccant that the factory shipped in the case. I will be watching this very carefully, just in case. At this point I feel no need to return. Ed

That's great news Ed, congratulations.

Is the finish on the wood of the neck, next to the fret ends, in good shape?

Good news! How does it look on the sides of the neck? is the filing noticeable at all? Glad you are happy because anew guitar is all about HAPPY! :D

Ed

Glad to hear your fret job went well. My guitar is still siting here waiting my decision. zZounds has sent me a shipping label, but I'm still on the fence about sending it back. The free set up and new strings are a + if the tech I take it to is any good.

Chris
