I have one coming from them on Saturday. I purchased it not just for the tax savings, they gave me 18 months to pay with just $18 service fee. I will let you know if there is a problem. Ed

Yea, the 18 months no interest was a big draw for me too. Otherwise I would have gone ahead and got mine from Sweetwater...

I purchased a Faded cherry model with maple frets, that I saw photos of my guitar and 4 others on the site. So I know that my guitar was opened and hopefully inspected when they took the pictures for the site. What color did you order? If you purchased a faded cherry, did you pick one from the photos they had there? FYI Sweetwater is offering 24 months no interest on their accounts handled by GE. I have too many open GE accounts so they wouldn't let me open another. Thanks Ed

I'm presently considering one of those interest-free accounts but I'm loathe to put all that personal info into an online application.

Fret sprout can be caused by changes in weather and humidity, especially on a guitar being shipped straight from some cold drafty warehouse and cross country.

I would bet it left fender in perfect condition, and this has happened in transit or storage.

I know the foreman for the Fender warehouse...and one thing it ain't is cold or drafty! It could have happened in shipping, we'll never know, but the OP should seek to ship it back for another one...which I am sure will be in mint condition.

Mine is Aged Cherry Burst and I did take a good careful look at the 6 guitars available when I picked mine. I see no way you could tell from the photos that the frets are sharp. They are not sticking out so far that you can see it in a picture. But when you hold the guitar and slide your hand down the neck you can feel a sharp edge on every fret top and bottom side all the way down the neck. I even went back and looked at the pictures of the ones they have for sale to see if I could notice anything and I can't.

I hope yours arrives in perfect shape. I'm going to try and wait it out a week and see if the change in humidity does anything positive. If not it's going back. I can't sit around looking at a guitar waiting for the wood to cure...

Guess I am a cork sniffer, but man I could never buy a mid to upper level guitar online. I have found Fender quality to be good overall, but I could try 5 new identical models of just about any guitar and notice substantial differences in how they sound. In fact, i rarely buy a "standard" model unless I can compare at least two other identical models.

I totally understand what you're saying, but I've had very good luck buying online in the past. This Strat sounds amazing and is nice and easy to play. If the frets weren't a problem it would be fine.

I do wish zZounds would do a 55 point inspection and set up the guitars like Sweetwater does. This would have never got out the door if someone would have taken a look at it right before it was shipped.

They're obviously doing well enough business wise not to have to.

The frets are sticking out slightly passed the edge of the neck on both sides. I've been told it's due to shrinkage of the wood because of low humidity. They also look and feel like they weren't filed and sanded as smooth as they should be in my opinion. My Chinese Les Paul and my Korean Schecter look and feel much better. I was really looking forward to a Made in the U.S.A. guitar and I hope this is not the norm...

The rep from zZounds said it should clear up in a week or so with exposure to humidity. I'm giving it a week and if it's not perfect the guitar is going back. zZounds said they will give me a full refund including shipping or a new guitar, my choice. I want a new guitar, but I'm going to ask for a full inspection of the new one one prior to shipping if that's what ends up happening.

To me, I think of fret sprout as something that happens over time where the fretboard contracts at a rate more than the frets do, leaving sharp fret edges (feel free to correct me if that is not correct). Hence for a 2014 model, to me this sounds like an improperly finished guitar and not fret sprout. This is shocking to me, as Fenders always have nicely finished necks -- not just MIA, but also true for MIMs and higher end Squiers. So... again ... shocking to me for a MIA Deluxe. I agree with others and say return it, especially considering the money spent. Just my $0.02...

On Tuesday It will have been in California for a week. If it's not improved it's going back. I tend to agree looking at close up pictures on zZounds and Sweetwater more carefully that this is just a bad fret job. I think it needs to be re-worked and no amount of time sitting in the case is going to magically fix it.

Well IMHO if this is a dehydration problem it happened in NJ before shipping. As I did not see the serial number of this guitar when I ordered mine, All of the remaining 5 I had to choose from were 2013 models. Knowing that you need to humidify your home in the winter on the east coast and Midwest I am thinking that the problem started in the zzound wherehouse. Ed

This winter in particular has been extreme here in NJ, little rain, major snow, consistently colder than normal and heated indoor climates are dry as usual.

In my home we have minmal humidifyer and I watch the guitars closely. My Taylor acoustic lives in its case with an often refreshed "Dampit".

Of the Electrics the three Fender Strats are all showing some degree of "Fret Sprout",

I've taken a Fret End Dressing File to the ends to reduce the snagability. It will be interested to see what happens when the warmer weather comes.

My MIJ '81 Electra X140, a hardtail. shows no sign of Fret Sprout. It's a Matsomuku with Hard Rock Canadian Maple throughout. Nice Brass Bridge and Nut. The electronics need replacing but it's a very well made guitar.

They were created by Japanese Master Woodworkers and instrument builders. I'm assuming their neck wood was truly seasoned before fretting, etc. was done.

I have never had a guitar with fret sprout yet thankfully. I have played several in stores that had it though. I have bought both online and locally. I have had to send back a Gibson 335 once , but as long as you buy from somewhere that has a good return policy , there shouldnt be a problem. I like to buy locally if I can, but sometimes you cant get what you want locally.
