The rain would mean increased humidity, causing the frets to "unsprout", the wood swelling. I have had this happen, sharp fret ends that "disappeared" in the spring after the fist rains started. I know that in this next winter when the humidity drops, those same frets will "sprout" again, which will be the best time to file them. Until then, I can be like the grasshopper that didn't have to work all summer.

I am getting ready to plant my greenhouse and garden.....Now I am confused! :? Sure glad I have only had this happen on one guitar neck!

It's easy Xhefri, as Aesop tells it, you're the ant who likes to work, while Shimmilou is the grasshopper who plays (guitar) all summer. :?

In the fall you have your fresh produce to eat and Shimmilou is hoping his chops are improved enough to have something to eat tossed in his hat.

In defense of Sam Ash, I was told the same information by the repair shop here. Fret sport is wear and tear, not normally covered by Fender. I think zzounds got involved because of two of them shipped the same week had the problem. By the way the tec I talked to at Fender, did not know of any case humidifier for a solid body guitar. If anyone here know of one please let me know. Ed

Thanks for the report Ed. I had an interesting thing happen today. About 3-4 weeks ago I put a new editor desk in my guitar/edit suite. In doing this I was able to utilize my space a lot better for recording, video editing and working on guitars. I have this big MAC PRO computer that I put down beside the desk so it was out of the way and accessible for all the ports. Well, this same room is the one where I recondition and put together custom guitars. In rearranging I put a couple guitar amplifiers on the wall right next to this desk where this Mac Pro computer is located. Between one of my Fender amps and the desk where the computer was sitting on the floor I had a space that I could utilize. So since it was a narrow space I stuck about five of my guitar necks in there and leaned them against the Mac Pro and the wall.

I never thought about the fact that the Mac Pro generates heat and has several fans inside of it. And these necks were leaning against it and the wall. So the fans were blowing the heat out right next to the necks on the wall, cooking them. Today I reached down there to get one of my 1989 Strat Plus maple necks and noticed that it had—FRET SPROUT! All the necks were really warm because of the heat coming off the computer. So then I checked one of the other maple neck, and it too had the same problem. So if a neck gets really warm and it's in the dry situation, fret sprouting happens. I immediately moved the necks to a different location in the room. The one maple neck that I wanted to use today I ended up having to use a sharp flat file, running it lengthways on both sides of the neck to smooth off the sprouting. The neck dressed up very nice and you can't even tell it was there now.

So I sprouted my own frets! Lesson learned. Do not store a guitar in a hot dry place because it will cook out what little moisture was left in the wood.

Buy a small travel soap dish that has a top. Now you have a small box. Drill two holes in each side, and put a damp sponge in it. Moisten monthly.

Oh, one other thing, the tech was quite surprised to see that Fender was paying for the fret work under warranty.

That tells you a lot about how Sam Ash, at least that store, treats repairs that should be done under warranty. 8)

I'm not sure if the comment is good or bad about Sam Ash. So just let me say this. They treated me right and did an awesome job. They didn't hesitate to take the guitar in and get a hold of Fender to authorize the repair.

The tech got the repair done quick and done right. There is no sign that I can see that the guitar was worked on. It looks perfect and feels and plays perfect. I would not hesitate to take any guitar there for repair.

All the shops I called told me that fret sprout was not covered under warranty. That is why I called Fender corporate to clear it up. If it wasn't covered the guitar was going back to zZounds.

Point taken Chris, it's not warranty work until authorized by Fender and the squeaky wheel will get the grease.

Just now Premier Guitar online magazine sent me this timely article:

"Guitar Shop 101: How to File Sharp Fret Ends" by John LeVan

Nice article, thanks for sharing! Only part that worries me is "This operation takes patience and skill." Sometimes I've got it sometimes I don't...ha ha

Hey Chris, I just did this and it was not very hard. I had a longer flat file than shown in the article with no wood top on it. I started in the middle of the neck stroking first toward the body and then toward the headstock. I was able to roll the edges too as I just stroked at an angle to the fretboard. I never hit the wood at all and did not nee to use my crowning file. End result felt that way it should and the length of the file protected me from gouging the wood.

A few years ago, I bought a new EB/MM StingRay 5 that had "fret sprout" (the only instrument I've owned thus far that has exhibited the problem). I emailed the company, they said it wasn't a serious problem and to take it to the store where I bought it. The tech corrected it in no time (I don't even think I left it with him overnight).

I've had no problem since.
