Well after much research I finally splurged on a brand new 2014 American Deluxe Stratocaster. When I opened up the box I was amazed at how nice the guitar looked, but as soon as I picked it up I noticed that ALL the Frets are sticking out slightly on both sides of the neck! They are sharp to the touch, needless to say I'm disappointed. I'm calling ZZounds in the morning to see about repairs or a return.

Has anyone else experienced this.

I did plug it in and play it a little and I love the sounds I can get with the S1 and 5 way switch. I just expect the top of the line to be perfect out of the box...

Chris

Welcome to the forum.

I have owned a number of American Deluxes; Strats mostly and a few Teles as well. They were all finished perfectly but one; a 2004 quilt top rear load model. It had a slightly high fret. I think I recall it was the 16th fret. I dressed it down just the tiniest of a smidgeon and then it played beautifully. Fret sprout can happen for several reasons. Your best recourse is to return it to the vendor as you have indicated. In future you will want to limit your purchases to guitars you can actually play prior to laying out your cash. I have had two similar experiences with quality issues on mail order guitars. Gibson Les Pauls in both instances. I won't buy another guitar sight unseen. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I will certainly consider a local purchase, but with taxes being near 10% I was just hoping to save a few bucks. I figured going with a high end model and a well reviewed store I would be OK. Guess I have some more thinking to do...

Really hoping there's no issues with it...

Fret sprout can be caused by changes in weather and humidity, especially on a guitar being shipped straight from some cold drafty warehouse and cross country.

I would bet it left fender in perfect condition, and this has happened in transit or storage.

.....not if the wood was too 'green' when the neck was built. By the time it becomes a neck it should be stable.

Being certain of what you are getting is well worth the extra money.

Sorry to hear about this. I would just return it. I would never let someone talk me into a repair on a brand new guitar. The good news is that there's tons of these things out there, so you'll get another one just fine.

fyi. American Deluxe is nowhere near top of the line. Even my Select had flaws, only minor cosmetic but still a flaw and sadly I see it on Fenders just like any other brand.

As others have said fret sprout isn't necessarily a manufacturing issue, it's usually a humidity/temperature issue and often temporary. Zzounds should just replace it, but have them open up the box and check to see if the replacement also has fret sprout. This should be a warranty issue on a brand new guitar but since you're working with an out-of-state dealer you might as well swap it out.

I've experienced that issue in the past, years ago, on a Buddy Guy model from Mexico. The issue did not resolve itself either with the use of a case humidier and the fact that my home heating system had a humidifier in the 'signal chain'. My tech appealed to FMIC and they paid him to adjust the fret ends. He was of the opinion that the stock was not completely 'dry' when manufactured. Not withstanding the validity of temperature/humidity issues under extreme conditions. I would expect more stabiity in these products.

I called and talked to zZounds this morning they said I was welcome to return the guitar, but asked that I leave it in the case for a week with a humidifier and see if it clears up. The rep said they see this happen at times when a guitar is shipped from the warehouse in a cold dry climate (NJ) to a warmer area (CA). I have 45 days to return the guitar for full refund or exchange at their expense so I'm going to hold on to it and see what happens.

I do think they should at least remove these guitars from the box prior to shipping them out and take a good look at them. I've received two guitars from Sweetwater and they came fully set up and tuned ready to play upon arrival. zZounds does not do set ups and suggested I take the guitar to a shop and have it set up.

I'll keep this thread up to date with my saga and see if the humidifier helps...

I have one coming from them on Saturday. I purchased it not just for the tax savings, they gave me 18 months to pay with just $18 service fee. I will let you know if there is a problem. Ed
