It's official - I can't sing and play at the same time - Doesn't help I'm a new player. Do you have to get good so you don't have to think about the playing or are there some tips that could help develop that skill

"Practice, Practice, Practice," and eventually it will click. Have patience and make sure you have mastered the basic chords well so you don't have to think too hard about them. Then move on to learning to sing a different rythm with your mouth that doesn't follow the one of your hands. Try humming first to make it easier.

Most importantly HAVE PATIENCE, it will all come together in time.

Welcome to the Forum Hiballer.

AaronK is right, takes practice and patience. You said it another way, "...you don't have to think about...".

Exactly, start with something simple, keep the strum VERY simple and don't pay too much attention to how the Vocal sounds at first. If forming chord shapes is still difficult, that will be a focus point, but you can strum it once and sing the melody, find another chord shape and repeat. :)

You're looking to develop your own style. That will evolve over time too. Just keep at it! 8)

I been playing two years, only just managed to sing and play a tune together this week.

I haven't spent a lot of time on it, I admit, I've focussed more on learning to play. But you have to be able to play well/automatically enough to not think about the playing too much.

You can try with simple 3 songs and strums, and take it slow, and try and learn both things at the same time, but progress in learning to play will be slower.

Start with simple 'cowboy' chord tunes and eventually you will find it easy. Good luck!

I had the same issue when I tried to incorporate my Harmonica playing while playing the guitar, ( I have been playing harmonica since 1971 and do not need to think about it), but I did need to think about my guitar playing and what a mess it was. Now after a couple of years I still need to think about my guitar playing when incorporating harmonica and singing but I can do it, not great but, I can do two things at the same time. Just takes time and more time but it does eventually work.
