Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had any sort of information on whether fret size could vary on the AVRI 62 Stratocaster? I bought mine second hand. It is a superb Ocean Turquoise jobbie --unusual, but not unheard of-- and all of the parts seem to check out (neck and body stamps helped!), but the fret wire on its neck is bigger than the vintage frets generally seen on the AVRI.

Can anyone shed some light on this mystery?

Thanks!

Likely it's been refretted.

Thanks guys.

Yes, I thought a refret likely. I was thinking that would leave marks, though, but I cannot see any...

Cheers!

A non-bound neck with little to no fretboard damage is a piece of cake for a competent luthier and few would leave any tell-tale signs of a refret.

It's something you really should have been told if that's the case. I love vintage frets, and it is a huge reason for owning the RI guitars that I do. If I brought one to find out it had modern frets, I'd be a bit pissed.

+1

If you're fine with the larger frets then no harm, no foul. OTOH, if it's a hindrance to your playing style then I'd call it a deal-breaker and return the guitar.

Many thanks for the feedback, all!

The re-fretting is not a deal breaker for me. I got the guitar fairly cheap ($750), and it's in great shape other than that.

I actually like bigger frets --I never really played much on vintage frets, so they're kind of foreign to me. I guess I accepted the "risks" when I bought the guitar. The guy I bought it from didn't really knew his stuff, and certainly not much about AVRI models.

Plus, dudes: it's Ocean Turquoise!

Cheers!

Sounds like a win/win all the way around.

And as you mentioned, it's Ocean Turquoise!

8) 8) 8)

One of my favorite custom colors.

Larger frets could be original because Fender does special runs for some of the larger retailers (like Dave's Guitar). You should ask the seller about it.

Quite true.

Larger factory frets are generally used in conjunction with a flatter radius -- does the neck have a 9.5" or 7.25" fretboard?

Hey guys!

Sorry for the late reply --it's been a bit crazy at work, and with our 1 year old baby girl...

Anyway, this one's a real head-scratcher, but you may have cracked it. First, my luthier insists that the guitar was not re-fretted, so these medium-jumbos are original, apparently. Second, he also insists that the radius in not 7.25, but rather 9.5 --although I gotta say that, for the first time in our relationship, his setup was not very good, and my little e string was chocking like mad on anything over a 1-tone bend. That's never happened to me before on radius of 9.5 or greater, but dude had his radius gauge, so who am I to argue, right? Right...

A further bit of weird info: the Fender decal on the headstock is glued above the lacquer. Is that normal? I've read that yes, for AVRIs, but my luthier is not sure.

Neck and neck pocket stamps to check out, though... Man,that's a weird one! I wrote Fender about it, but no answers so far... We'll see. I gotta post some pics soon, or you guys are going to think that I'm just pulling your collective legs!

Cheers!
