How much difference in tone(if any) would you get from changing a 254.1k(actual readings) volume pot to a 266k pot, would it be brighter?

Only in theory - or in psychoacoustics...

You won't hear it .

250k is the standard same as 250,000 ohms .

250,001 ohms is brighter than 250,000 but less brighter tan 250,002 ohms witch is less brighter than .........

I went from a regular set of CTS 250k pots, V- 254.1, T-268.8, T-262.7, to a matched CTS 10% tolerance set all three exactly 266k.I was not looking for a tone change, but after puttting them in the volume seems louder, had to turn the volume knob down quite a bit with the same amp setting I had before, and the tone seems brighter.I figure the new strings I put on when changing pots is what makes it seem brighter, but was surprised at the volume increase.Has anyone tried these new CTS pots?

Your amp must be exactly 100% same setting , you must ply not harder ....your ear ....

Sorry but I don't truss your test

Its not test, just a observation, I did not want or expect a tone or volume change, between the two sets of CTS 250k pots, but did notice a change whether you trust it or not, simply trying to find out if anyone else here has tried these or has had a similar experence.

Doubling/halving the pot value has a significant effect on how the guitar sounds, measurable differences inside branch tolerances don't. I won't comment on different pot manufacturers, 'cause I only use CTS regulars (& don't bother measuring every single unit).
But: that's just MyHumbleOpinion. If you hear a difference and you like it, trust your ears, go with the flow and play. LOUD.

+1

You changed too many things to attribute what you are hearing to the 5% change in pot resistance.

(Trust?)

What brand of Solder did you use?

Sorry, about the wisecrack. I don't think you can attribute any audible change to the new pots, UNLESS your old pots/solder joints were really deficient.

use the higher value pot in the volume. i have a 280k(waaayyyy out of tolerance)it's older but works very well. made the strat louder and more responsive. it dosen't get the slightly darker sound as you turn down the volume( i never went for the treble bleed mod either).all my pots in my strats have been changed and all are above 250k. all are wired old school(no tone on bridge)and they sound ballanced. brighter but in a good way. i even use a .1uf cap in all them. we may have discovered a SECRET to good sound. the more we get beat up over it the more right we are. it's a fickle forum.lol.

Thanks shinkicker, I always expect the usual comments from the "peanut gallery" when posting anything more than what color strat to get on here. The new CTS set I put in are a matched set, all exactly 266k, and your experience was what I was looking for, going from a 254k to a 266k did increase the volume for me also.As I stated earlier I figured the increase in brightness was just due to the new strings.

new strings DO make a difference but those higher value pots do worlds of good. like i stated i am actually able to use a .1uf cap instead of a .022uf(fender normally uses)and get some good tone range from my strats. i like them bright but not brittle. this was my solution. i test all my pots and put them in selected positions based on my pups and how i want them to sound.

It's been a number of years since I changed my pots, so I don't really even remember what values I put in (I just know I'm happy); but it seems to me that there was a difference between the volume pot and the tone pots. That is, one was an audio taper while the other was linear.
If you changed the configuration of your set up, that is - changed linear to audio or vice versa, I would think that should have a dramatic affect on your volume or tone (at any given position of the knob).

I have to agree that the measured difference in resistance probably isn't enough to cause an audible difference between the two. However, if your replacement pots represent a real improvement in quality, you may well be able to hear the difference as well.

i always use audio taper. it works better all around. linear taper pots are really for a single tone control on an effects pedal (bass one direction and treble the other).at least they work best for that application.

Apologies for my answer that was not the opinion you wanted to get. Won't bother you again.
