One of my guitars is a MIM Stratocaster HSS built in 1990 (MN000362).
When I bought the guitar 2nd hand the backplate was black which I decided to change.
To my surprise the backplate is a different size to the present day MIM backplate, also different to US and Japanese Fenders and Squires.

The distances between the top (and bottom) 2 screws is 8cm and not 7,5, the other sizes are the same.

1. Were the backplates in 1990 different to the present day ones?
2. If they are different, does anybody know where I can get one?
3. Have I been sold a dud :( ? (Everything appears to be correct!!!)

Thanks,
Bruce

The trem spring cavity cover, or "backplate", is the same in 1990 or today. It seems that you just got the wrong one, maybe the one you got is for a Squier.

Thanks shimmilou. No as I said in my posting I've tried Squires, US, Japanese and Mexican backplates and none fit. The distance between the screws is different by .5 cm.

Can you post a picture of the screw holes on your guitar?

The one on the left came with the strat, the one the right is an original Fender.

The tremolo blok looks very small !!!

Image

I think that the neck is an Original Fender, but the body !!!!

this is a 98 MIM...

Image

Those thin trem blocks are typical for MIM's of the 90's....

Thanks, at least that explains the tremolo blok.

Just because the backplate doesn't line up with all the screw holes does not make that body illegitimate.. 1990 is a long time to the present, I rarely find an exact plate that matches.
It's more likely a genuine MIM body and neck, what you can do is just source a backplate without the holes predrilled, you can actually just buy a whole rectangular 3 ply, cut out 2 sets of front and back plates for less than buying One pick guard... Then you can have a better choice of color or print finish...

Thanks for the information.
i've decided not to bother. The guitaar plays well, the neck is great, but it's not worth the effort seeing the value of the strat.

What does value have to do with it...
Set up the Strat. as to how you want it to look regardless of a minimal value...
So many people seem so obsessed with the " Value " of their Stratocaster, as if they were potential securities. They're not.... :!:
We pay one price for these guitars, they are never going to return initial expenditures, since they fall within a "durable good ".
If it plays well, sounds great, fine... If not change a couple of things and then just enjoy it for what it is. If at some point you resell it for 50% of your initial expense, then that is good...
These are basically just simply assembled instruments from parts...

What I meant is; I've spent many hours searching internet looking for the correct backplate without success, so I've decided to keep the black one.

But you could get a small blank either 2 or 3 ply, in the color scheme / pattern you want and cut it to fit, then bevel the edges with a file and drill the correctly placed / traced holes...

There are many online dealers that sell just blanks...
Personally for me, it has to be correct...
