Keep the Lester, buy a Highway One Strat!

I have 6 guitars now. LP Classic with 57 Classic pups (fantastic vintage tone), LP Special Doublecut with P90's (so sweet and clear...great honk too), A Flying V (metal cut to the bone), SG 61 Reissue with Maestro trem (AC/DC and Sabbath all the way), My 87 ESP Mirage Custom (my VH and acoustic sim guitar), and my HWY 1 Strat. Each has a special tone that is distinct. I use them all and would not part with any.

I bought a Les Paul about five years ago after being advised by two very good friends not to do so. Both of them had several years more of playing time under their belts than I did. I loved the look of the Paul and the body style, but my freinds who I did't listen to one of whom had been playing 40 plus years told me that the Les Paul was heavy and wouldn't come close to matching the sound of an American made Strat.

I bought the Paul and whereas the weight wasn't a big deal the sound was.
And especially when playing lead on the higher sounding (E B G) strings.
If one was going to play a lot of bass lines it had a good sound for that but it in no way was capable of keeping up with either of my Strats or my Tele.

One of the Strats (Delux made in Mexico) the Les Paul was no match for it.
Some may argue that because it was a Les Paul Studio that it would have been better to have bought one of Gibson's much higher end Pauls, but I have played just about every Gibson electric guitar on the market today (with the exception of the 335 and the Les Paul gold top) and none sound or feel as good as a Fender Stratocaster ( lower end one or not).
The only Gibson I have ever played that I really liked was the Blues Hawk.
I had a chance to buy one a few years ago and didn't but sure wish I had did so. But even it didn't play and sound as good as a Strat.

I guess by now you know I'm a Strat man but I would say to you if the Paul meets what you like about a guitar and sounds good to you then keep it but if you bought a Strat you can't go wrong there either.

Hmmmmm...I own both a strat and a les paul. I agree, they are totally different instruments, each having its own personality and flavor. I love my strat...my Les Paul? not so much. To be honest, I much prefer my SG over my Les Paul anyday and twice on Sundays! I play a lot of slide, and the SG is perfect for that. Quite frankly, though, as for just plain playing - I prefer the strat. That being said - I would still keep the Les Paul and save for the strat. I agree with everyone else who said that you never get rid of a guitar!

Believe it or not the epi ultra les paul offers a light weight, quality option, in a spectacular color for those who don,t want to shoulder the weight. On the other hand, I have never sold any of my guitars and don,t intend to,

BACK IN 1972 I OWNED A LP CLASSIC REALLY GREAT GUITAR. RECENTLY I OWNED A LP STANDARD WITH 60'S NECK. DON'T KNOW WHAT GIBSON DID BUT THE QUALITY OF SOUND AND TONE IS NOT THERE. RECENTLY I BOUGHT A ERIC JOHNSON STRATOCASTER AND IT IS THE BEST GUITAR I HAVE OWNED FOR QUALITY AND SOUND. :)

For those of you strat players who'd like an LP, but just don't like the tone, you really should try the LP Studio Mahogany. Best sounding LP I've owned and the only one I've ever liked. And....it's only $799! No finish to speak of. Just a hunk o' mahogany and a neck. The Burstbucker Pro pups sound fantastic! Only drawback is you have to do the finish work yourself. Since they're so cheap, the fretwork, setup are barely done at all. Still it's a bargain.

I'm primarily a bassist, but also own a Fender 50th Anniversary '54 Stratocaster and a Gibson (Music Rising - Katrina) Les Paul Standard. The weight of the Les Paul was no big deal since I'm used to lugging basses around. Use a wide Lakland Bass Strap to distribute weight across your shoulder.

What I found difficult to get used to was the Gibson LP's Large Blocky Frets, especially at the upper register. The LP frets weren't smooth to my touch. Hard to explain... but I think you guys know what I mean.

Keep both guitars...the Gibson and the Fender. Never sell or trade a guitar. You'll regret it and pine for the memories you made together! Trust me.

I must agree with everyone. You should, if you're able to keep both, they both are great guitars. The Strat is a cleaner, more defined sound while the LP has a heavier, bolder sound. Both have their place depending on the type of music you are playing. Myself, I could never get used to the Gibson neck, so I sold mine. But I still have my trusty Univox double humbucker so I can still get that classic 70's sound, but I play the Strat 95% of the time, but it is just my preference. If you have a LP with a wider neck, you may want to make sure you get a Strat with a similar neck. Good Luck!

You'll need both a single coil set-up and a humbucker set-up. I want a humbucker guitar, but I'm going with one of Ed Romans Quicksilvers. When I get out of school that is. I now own a Eric Johnson Strat, love it.
