personally i prefer strats, but that doesnt mean i'll trade in a freaking les paul, i'd keep the les paul, and buy a strat, but sadly me being in grade 10(11 in september) i can never save up for a les paul, so you get the point

Well, you could always get the Epiphone version... I got the Epi LP Standard (China) and in workmanship it compares favorably with my 2006 MIM Strat and 2007 MIM Tele--although the MIMs seem put together slightly better.

each guitar has a very different sound to them. mostly due to one having single-coil pickups and the other humbuckers, but there's also the neck-through-body factor, too, which helps the Les Paul produce more sustain as well.

If you like the sound that the Les Paul produces at all, then I would hold onto it, and get the Strat as an additional guitar. The Strat won't be able to sound like a Les Paul, and vice versa, so have both if you want to be able to do each sound.

I agree with the other guy's instead of having one or the other why not save up and have the best of both? I prefer Gibson's because (in my opinion) i think they are much easier to play and have a sweeter sound than fender but hey that's me! :D having both a Fender and a Gibson is also something to be proud of too i'd have to save up for year's to afford either of them i'm having to cope with one of trevor wilkinson's vintage guitars at the moment :( although there not that bad good for begginers and amatures!

It is nice to have both. I would chose a Strat if I could have only one.
The body shape is more comfortable. I have a Les Paul which I have a replacement Gibson 498T pick up that has four wires so that with a three way on-on-on switch you can get three different sounds from it with series- split-parallel wiring. You can get the new Les Paul Standards that have much lighter chambered bodies. They still have pretty good sustain because of the set neck mahogany design and they are available with a slimmer 1960's neck shape. Les Pauls retain a higher value and appreciate more as a used guitar. I happen to have a Fender Custom Shop Strat that is like a Les Paul in that it has a mahogany body with a quilted maple top and it has an ebony fingerboard like a Les Paul Custom. I have a second pickguard for it with humbuckers that are switchable to single coil mode and a Seymour Duncan JB Jr. single coil size humbucker in the middle that is normally wired in parallel mode but it is also switchable to humbucker mode. You can buy Strats with humbuckers installed at the factory that can switch to single coil mode or sounds that are similiar, and you can buy a single coil size Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, JB Junior or Dimarzio Tone Zone humbucker for any or all positions with switches to get humbucker/ single coil / parallel sounds out of them. You can do that one step at a time so that it doesn't cost too much at once.

Les Paul guitars are actually called " set neck " because the neck is glued into the body. A true neck through body guitar has the neck whcih is made of several laminated pieces of wood running right through the whole body whcih the Les Pauls do not.

Don't sell the LP!! I am fortunate enough to have both a LP and a MIA Strat. The Paul is great and you'll never be satisfied with anything trying to replicate that "tone". However, the strat has a better feel and is much more versatile in terms of sound and music styles. You'll find your guitar choice will come down to the type of music and your mood at the time.

I would advise getting a Maple neck strat. Rosewood has a warmer, dare I say darker sound, but you have a Paul for that. Also, if your Paul has an ebony fretboard, the maple will provide a similar feel.

Keep the Les Paul. If you don't you'll regret it forever.

Save up and buy the Strat so you can have a single coil guitar too.

I traded a '79 Les Paul for an Amer. Strat and I have regretted it ever since. I love both guitars, and there is a place for both of them. Keep your Les Paul, save up for the Strat...you won't regret it.

Well I think that the strat is much better than a Les Paul. Another reason why you have to change your guitar by a strat is that the strat have a floyd (a very good floyd). And there is non a ig numbre of Les Paul guitars that have one, and if one o those have one is not better than the floyd of a strat. Thats why I think that you should change your Les Paul by a Strat!

Well I think that you should keep it and buy a strat i think it has a good sound i like the buzz though some might dissagree and i think that the 3 single coils give you some versatility. I like the strat better but dont trade in the guitar just buy a cheap strat.

Thats a tough one!! i own a 2002 Gibson Les Paul Std and two fender strats!!....(60's reissue & Deluxe) and like having the option of the two! but if i could choose between the two..the Strats would win...tho ive played Gibsons for a number of years live, and love the sound, i do now find them heavy after a two hour gig!!.. Fenders have more range in sound, are less stress on the shoulder and back. So i just use strats now..i even fitted Seymour Duncan Hot Rail in the bridge of one just for that extra growl!! so works that well for me!!! :D

But i would keep the Les Paul and look out for a nice strat, you aint gotta spend loads...look at a deluxe players strat for around £500..noiseless pickups, fat frets, flatter profile figerboard!! and vintage style tuners!! Nice!! and the colours are cool too!!! 8)

I would agree that you should keep your LP but not agree that you should buy a cheap Strat! I own a LP Custom and a Strat and would not part with any of them. They both have different characteristic's when played and one is more suited to certain style's of music than the other and vice versa. The weight of the LP can easily be overcome by the type of strap you use. I had a strap made of 6" wide leather which for me has absorbed a lot of the weight. Nowaday's it should be possible to buy used vintage model Strat reasonable and you wont buy a better guitar.

If money isn't a problem (and it usually is), keep both. Some will tell you that to get most of the sounds you'll ever need, get a Strat, Tele, LP and an ES335. Of course, that's about $7,000 at today's prices. The Strat and the LP should get you through most anything.

For what it's worth, everytime I sold a guitar, I always ended up regretting it.
