It's kinda funny, you're gonna get very biased opinions on a Fender forum.

Most of what's been posted so far has been biased toward "get/have them both."

I appreciate that in a forum. I don't ride but I prefer the kind of forum where (to use a motorcycle analogy) It doesn't matter what you ride, it matters that you ride is more likely to be heard than, Brand X is the only ride worth riding.

To answer the original question, I'm with the majority here. I'm not going to sell my Les Paul when I buy my first Strat (and/or Tele).

i understand where most of you are coming from... this is a fender forum and it is pretty biased one way, but if you look at my post on one of the previous pages it really isn't a fair arguement... both have their own distinct sound and have their uses... i love both my strat and les paul... it all depends on what you're playing, but if yo play a little of everything, its a GREAT two guitar rig that can get pretty much any tone from the right amp and effects

I had a similar problem when I was researching for my first guitar. The Les Paul is one rockin' machine, as is the Strat, but yes, they are heavy! I decided on a Stratocaster because they are: A - Cheaper in price; B - 3 pounds lighter; and most important of all C - they are versatile! But essentially, it's really up to you.

I'll say again........
You can't compare the two......
it's simply a matter of price,, weight , and what sound you're looking for.
You can get any guitar worth a flip , a nice effects processor, and good tube amp and get ANY kind of sound you want.

Buy a guitar that fits your hand as well as your price range and ears.
Remember,, The axe you play in a store on an amp that's not like your own will sound differently when you get it home... Make sure you try it on the brand amp you normally use and make sure IT FITS YOUR HANDS ..

I wouldn't advise anyone to ever part with any guitar. They are all a huge part of my past and who I am. In various instances My Les Paul is the perfect choice as is my Firebird, Strat, and so on. I traded off a Les Paul Artisan triple pick up that I will always regret.
Never again!

Would appreciate some advice. I have a year old Les Paul and was considering either buying a new Strat or trading in my Gibson. The primary reason is the obscene weight of the Les Paul. It's too damn heavy. What other ammunition can you provide that would motivate me to switch to a Strat? Thanks very much.

The heavier, the better. Personally, I would keep the Les Paul and just save up for the Start. They're both awesome guitars, but I would never trade a Les Paul in for a Strat. ^_^

I played a Les Paul for years and can appreciate what you can do with it. However, once I got a Eric Clapton model strat, I didn't pick up the Les Paul again. I prefer the neck and weight, and with the midboost, I can get the fatness of the Les Paul. However, I agree with not getting rid of your Paul, unless you really feel a need to. I sold mine just because it was sitting there, and I wasn't really playing it. Getting a strat does give you many more tonal options.

If you really cannot stand the weight of the Les Paul, try on trading it in for a SG or an ES-335. Both have a similar sound to the Les Paul, but they're loads lighter. I suggest you get a SG with a maple top to match the Les Paul's tone better in similarity. But I dont' think you should ever trade in a Fender for a Gibson, or vice versa. Each is too different to be compared. And by the way, I'm new, hi everyone.

I prefer the Strat. I have never been able to get comfortable paying a Gibson. To me a Strat Feels like home.

Don't sell the LP!! Increase the size of you collection and buy a strat.

I have a Mex. Standard Jazz Bass and a Mex. Standard Strat with some heavy strings. It's fun switching from one to the next. :D

I understand the LP is heavy, but do you like it's sound?? Decide what sound you like first than decide which guitar you like best, I wanted to love a Strat, but the HWY 1 didn't suit me and neither did the VG Strat, now I have a Tele and ES335 and I'm pretty content (for now). I'm sure I'll have a Strat again but for now I need to focus on more on my ability and less on equipment.

:D Get yourself an Eric Clapton Signiture strat, this guitar was designed to Eric Claptons taste, it is truly a pratical guitar (I own three of them). The only thing I can suggest is try one out, the TBX system will give you the best of both worlds. Remember Eric played L.P.'s for along time as well as Strats.
