heres my comparison from owning two great examples of each guitar (in my opinion)

first the strat: i have a deluxe players MiM and it plays great.. it feels nice, the neck it a good shape for relatively fast movement. i have noiseless pickups in it which give it a nice warm sound for a whole variety of musical styles i got mine for about 600 USD, and its a great value for the money

the les paul: i own an epiphone elitist les paul, which seems to be comparable to a gibson lp studio, or slightly better. it has a more crunchy tone to it than the strat, but still sounds great. the neck it also a bit thicker than the strats, but its still quite playable. the weight everyone generally complains abot does not bother me at all, i'm use to it, but its something you should put into consideration before buying it.

both guitars are beautiful and different in their uses. i think its one of the best 2 guitar rigs you can have for shows for the sheer variety or music you can get out of the two. i really couldn't pick between the two, both are great guitars.

In my opinion, it's the strat all the way. It's the most versatile guitar on the planet, it can handle anything and handle it well. Don't get me wrong though, the les paul sounds very good, for soloing that is, but nothing more. It just gets too damn muddy for anything besides soloing, unless you play jazz or something and keep it fairly clean, it sounds very good.

Speaking of jazz, when I'm messing around with jazz, I prefer the sound of my strat over a les paul. Ever since the first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan cover Kenny Burrell's "Chitlins Con Carne", I knew a strat could definetely hold it's own in the jazz world with no problems.

One thing that should make your mind up on choosing, is the fact that a strat can come closer to sounding like a les paul, than a les paul can trying to sound like a strat (both stock of course).

Strats are my fav, but I say why not just collect them all? You know, just by all the great guitars, teles, jaguars, sg's, firebirds, les paul juniors, just have fun with it.

Players prefrence - I think if you were a gigging musician, you should look for something in between the two, like a tele hh or something. but the strat is a terrific guitar to have and les pauls are perfect for home use. (good for showin' off too!)

You can't compare the two......
each has it's own unique care-ik-ture..
The strat is easier to play because of the body style I have a hard time playing the LP for very long both because of weight and the square cut outer body style...it tends to cut into the forearm .
Most LP's have thicker necks , are heavier bodied, and in my opinion somewhat more bulky feeling.
There's also no comparing the tone ,, each has it's own and it just depends on what you're looking for and how much weight you can handle and for how long..

I just really dislike the weight of the les pauls.
Strats are great to throw on and just play,
without having to wear a back brace.
but the sounds of both of them are amazing sounds, but it's all prefference

It's kinda like comparing a 1970 Dodge Charger to a 65 Mustang. Different animals...but both very cool.

I believe every serious guitar player should have a Stratocaster and a Les Paul. That covers a lot of tonal ground. Throw in a semi-hollow body and you've pretty much got all the bases covered. Just an opinion.

I'm a strat man myself, but sometimes you just want that huge hunk o'mahogany for that warm tone and sustain.

You really have to ask yourself what kind of music do you play and what kind of pups will get you there. After that it's just about finding a guitar thats comfortable and in your price range.

a few days ago i was in Cincinatti and stopped at Sam Ash and Guitar Center. jammed on a bunch of guitars. out of ALL the guitars i played the only one that REALLY stood out and spoke to me was a simple fender standard strat, white with rosewood fretboard.

i also played a few gibsons including an SG and a double cutaway. they were nice, and these were the faded ones, the neck is a lot more raw and smooth. but it still didn't feel right. they looked beautiful, sounded good, but the necks especially just didn't feel right. and the regular versions with the standard finish on the necks are even worse.

there's just nothing that can beat the updated fender necks with the satin finish... pure heaven...

the ONLY thing that came EVEN close was the Ibanez JS1000. specs on that neck are about the same. but it still wasn't a strat...

I have both Strat's and Les Pauls. They're so different in tone and feel but both models are awesome guitars. I'd never trade a Les Paul for a Strat or the other way around.

Would appreciate some advice. I have a year old Les Paul and was considering either buying a new Strat or trading in my Gibson. The primary reason is the obscene weight of the Les Paul. It's too damn heavy. What other ammunition can you provide that would motivate me to switch to a Strat? Thanks very much.

Keep the Les Paul and get the Strat. I regret ever getting rid of a nice guitar just to get another nice guitar. Two different pieces altogether.

i'm lucky enough to own a couple of strats and a couple of gibsons, one a les paul. i couldnt choose between any one of them and is exactly why i must have more, more,MORE!!! seriously, playing in a cover band doing songs with varied tunings, i've learned that my guitars are not created equal. they all have drastically different characteristics, i couldnt play the stuff i play without each one of them doing they're part. but, when i just pick up a guitar to play at home or jam, i cant help grabbing the am deluxe. by far the most fun to play of all my guitars. not just saying it because its a fender forum. i love all my kids equal. one just gets more quality time with dad.

I have been playing Strats and Les Pauls since around 1968, and you have to have both to get the unique sounds that each can offer. The best combination I ever had (and did not know how great a deal or guitar it was until it got stolen), was my 1958 LP Goldtop, that had a defective pickup when I got it. I took it to Pyramid Guitars on Grand River, in Detroit, Mich., and had a very hot split coiled, phased set-up added to the original PAF humbucking neck pickup. With those adaptations I could get the Funky Eric Clapton bluesy sound and the beefy sustain from one ax. I just saw one similar vintage at Geo. Gruhn's for $125K, and died all over again. :( But, I've also had 1963 sunburst Strat for $225 in original case, and could not get it to play as nice as my 1983 $@! Squire Strat. The Blonde necks are the best for me; they warm up quickly, and have a brighter sound. I don't gig, so I am my only critic, and my only fan. But as Les Paul has been quoted, " You can never own too many guitars..." so I have 9 right now, and I'm always looking for the one that got away (actually 4 got stolen in that one heist, the LP, a 1976 Martin D-35, an Aria Pro black LP copy, and a 1965 SG Std.).

I have an Epiphone/Gibson Special... not as heavy as an actual Gibson, and the playability/sound is great. But I am shopping around for a Fender without a whammy bar. So if I have my way, I'll have both the Epiphone/Gibson and a Fender!
