I'm in agreement with the majority on this one. I wouldn't trade an LP for a Strat nor would I trade a Strat for an LP. I'd save up and have 1 of each,

I'd say keep the Les Paul and buy the strat if you have enough money. If not trade it in for sure. The strats lighter, has a much better curve to play while sitting, and in my opinion has the better sound of the 2.

I'm going to go against the grain and say sell the LP for as much as you can and buy the nicest Stratocaster you can afford.

Variety is the key - enjoy both if you can. Never sell.

You have to have some variety. At one point in time I have over 40 guitars of different makes and models. One by one I got rid of the ones I didn't care for.
I know have 4 guitars that I like and play on a regular basis.

They are:

1986 Fender MIJ '72 RI Strat
2006 Fender Upgraded Highway 1
2001 Gibson Les Paul Standard
2006 Gibson CS-336

There is nothing like the sound of an LP…a Strat…or a Tele. I traded a Strat Plus to buy a Les Paul Standard. I love the Les Paul but have regretted letting go of the Strat. I have since also purchased and American Deluxe Tele and STILL miss the sound of the Strat. I am now on the prowl for my next Strat.

To help reduce some of the stress on your shoulder from the weight of the Les Paul I would recommend the Planet Waves Polypropylene Strap for Bass sold at Musiciansfriend.com or Guitar Center for about $20. It is 3” wide and nicely padded. I bought one when I got my Les Paul and have since put them on my other guitars.

I would also strongly recommend Schaller Strap Locks to keep that heavy beast securely attached to your strap! Please note the screws for the Strap Lock are slightly smaller than the standard strap button screws. I put in a couple toothpicks with wood glue in the screw holes before installing the strap locks.

Being the fanatical, chauvinistic Gibson-loathing Fender-fundamentalist that I am,I shall wisely stay out of this thread or I'll post something that'll get me banned before you can say:"do you e-mail your mother with that keyboard?!"

It's all preference.
But the problem with Les Paul's is that for some reason, Gibson likes to jack up the price, where as with Fender, you get what you pay for.

Very True, Gibson has raised their prices 3 or 4 times in the last 18 months.

I'm of the thought that - I just haven't been able to bond with an LP. Could be the weight, but I'll consider a PRS before I invest in a Gibby. They may be great guitars but not for me.

As far as Strat's, for the price and selection you just can't beat them.

To me an LP isn't a good one unless it is heavy. Mine weighs 10lbs.

I don't think I would be comfortable for an extended period of time with a 10lb axe on my shoulder. Granted there are lighter ones out there and then there is the Cloud 9 series etc etc..

I ain't knocking Gibby, like I said not for me.

It is quite tiring on the shoulder, however I have found that by using a wider (4 in.) strap it distributes the weight better.

I have heard that the new chambered/weight relieved LP's actually sound pretty good.

It's kinda funny, you're gonna get very biased opinions on a Fender forum.

For me the key to dealing with the "heft" of a Les Paul is a good, wide, heavily padded strap and adjusting the strap so you are not reaching down too far to play. I know many like to have them low...but that kills my back. I am not a large guy and I can play mine (standing) easily for a couple hours with no break and no problems.

That said….my Tele feels light as a feather when I strap it on after playing the Les Paul!
