Would appreciate some advice. I have a year old Les Paul and was considering either buying a new Strat or trading in my Gibson. The primary reason is the obscene weight of the Les Paul. It's too damn heavy. What other ammunition can you provide that would motivate me to switch to a Strat? Thanks very much.

In my opinion one of the things that makes a Les Paul is the weight, The heavier it is the better it sounds. My LP weighs in at close to 10lbs and I love it.
I also love my Strats which weigh considerably less.

It's all a matter of personal opinion/choice.

theyre both great guitars. I would not trade in the Les Paul for the strat. Rather save up and buy a Strat so you can enjoy both of them. Personally I am not a huge fan of the Les Paul because of the weight and the neck, its too wide for me. I enjoy guitars with thinner necks (some fenders and especially Ibanez and Schecter). But i still wouldnt trade away the les paul.

I agree with the other comments made above and that you should keep the LP and save for a Strat. They're both beautiful guitars and unique in their own individual ways but I wouldn't be swapping one for another.

If you have any love for the LP then keep it. If it doesn't tug at your soul then get rid of it and get something that does, preferably a Strat or Tele :!:

When discusing two equally great, iconic guitars such as the Strat and the Les Paul, one can not pit them against one another. Each having their own sonic coloring as well as advantages and disadvantages. While I prefer a Strat; the more "colors" you have in your sonic paint box the better. The well rounded guitarest should have both the Strat and the LP. With these two guitars you got it covered.

I would keep your Les Paul unless you really hate it. I personally would keep the LP and save up for a Strat. A lot of people have both a Strat and LP because they feel and sound pretty different. Really all it comes down to is your personal choice.

I agree, save for the Les Paul and keep the Strat. I have a Les Paul and ES335 Gibson and just purchased a used American Dlx Fat Strat. They produce vastly different sounds. I would never part any of these guitars as they distinct sounds and now I can get almost any sound I want since Fender and Gibson have almost everything covered. You will eventually miss the Les Paul if you sell it.

a strat is a totally different guitar then a les paul, so you would be disappointed i think when you trade your guitar. i should buy a strat, and keep your les paul too

I totally agree with most of the posts above. But I got to disagree with CAFeathers. In my opinion, weight does not mean quality.

Les Pauls are heavy guitars by nature, but they can get even heavier if you do not build it with well-chosen wood. For example, some (or maybe most) late 70's Strats are heavy as hell, but it doesn't mean they're the best sounding guitars ever. It was the consequence of a poor wood choice.

And yeah, keep both guitars.

i'd say keep the les paul and just buy a strat outright. never sell a guitar! :D you don't know how much you'll miss it until it's actually gone - believe me on that one.

I actually have a les paul and a strat as well. They're both great guitars. I wouldn't sell the les paul to buy a strat, but I personally prefer the strat or tele. So if I were to go back and get another guitar, I would get a fender.
