Great collections on this thread! Awesome!

You can see from my sig what I've got but what I need would be a Les Paul Standard with Slash or Alnico 2 pups and Graphtec saddles (I break strings  ), a Strat Plus deluxe with Silver, Silver, Blue Lace Sensors and a backup Strat Plus or Deluxe with Lace sensors or noisless pups.

With those three I could do all the gigs I currently do without any hassle. To be honest they are the only three I take with me to gigs anyhow! Although I've been taking my Modern Player Jaguar recently (which has Bare knuckle P90 pups and Bare Knuckle CTS pots and a Sprague cap) as my Ash Strat Plus Deluxe is being re-fretted.

How many guitars do I want? well that's a whole other story (might be picking up a used MIM Tele standard tonight for £150 ($225) ).

I'm also missing a hollow body, and an explorer, and another les paul etc......

Oh the joy of GAS!!!

Good answer and I think the point of the thread. We all know we want more than necessary. But are the extras about as useful as glass unicorn figurines?
I tend to agree with Arth1, a good guitar needs to be played. I'm actually considering selling one of my most cherished guitars, my CS Clapton, because we haven't bonded that well and I rarely play it. I'd like to see it go to someone that I know and will run into once in a while and I can watch it get used properly.

There you have it, "How Many Guitars Do You NEED?".

Personally I'm heading towards one Strat and one acoustic. They would suit my actual needs, I'll never play out or record again.

I've sold 19 guitars in the last couple of years and if I take on another guitar project something will be sold.

Don't get me wrong, I admire the beautiful collections displayed in these pages. I don't have disdain for them. I just don't have time to dust that many guitars, never mind play them! :D

I currently have 2 electrics (well 3, but one wouldn't even get me 10€ if I sold it - my very first guitar..some 10 years old behringer that cost 100€ with the amp and everything, a beginners pack) and an electroacoustic.
Electrics being Fender Stratocaster Highway 1 (alnico II - if I remember correctly - single coils) and Gibson Les Paul Studio Limited Worn Brown colour with 2 Burstbucker pro pickups (alnico V). My electroacoustic is a Takamine EG-240 made in Indonesia.
I am a student and pretty much all my income goes for studying, some then goes for my GF and the rest goes for guitar-related stuff.

What I want:
- another Gibson LP (PAF 90 PUPs)
- Gibson SG
- Fender Telecaster
- a 12 string electric
- would LOVE the Fender Gilmour strat
- Gibson ES-335
- a better-quality electroacoustic that would also feel right in my hands

What I absolutely need: nothing that I don't already have
I think my next guitar purchase will be in approx 2 years time though. Can't do much saving when you're a student. But I promised myself I'll buy myself a guitar when I get my BSc (probably another Gibson LP). Then another one for my MSc and another one for my PhD  It will be a good motivation.
My last bigger purchase was in december when I got my first tube amp, Fender Supersonic 60 (got it used, mint condition, rarely used although it was 3 years old and all tubes had been swapped before I bought it for 900€, new ones cost 1500-1600€ here  ). I can't rationalize purchases to my family or GF through gig-earned money (since we use all that money for band-related stuff), so I rationalize it as being gifts to myself for having good grades - which will only motivate me further to have even more good grades - and what not. The amp was a gift to myself for being amongst top 5% students in the country based on my GPA. The wah and a good pedal tuner were rationalized with me selling the old amp (I still had some money from the sold amp left, of course, after the purchase of the pedals) and my brand new Ducktail Delay (wasn't cheap, cost 185€) was rationalized with having a good first semester :P Think I'm going to rationalize the fuel tank I gotta buy with being under a lot of stress  Although then it's time for saving up so I can really buy the guitar I want when I get my BSc and don't need to look too much at the price.

WOW!... and I thought 6 was alot. I have 3 strats, 2 Taylor acoustics, 1 Fender acoustic I just picked up yesterday. Its like people with a large gun collection. You can only shoot one gun at a time unless your Wyatt Earp and one in each hand. Here's my Fender CD140SM Kinda has that zebra Ted Nugent thing going. Image

It would probably be easier to answer which one I would save in a fire. My husband and I both play, and we firmly believe in abusive and unadulterated obtainment of musical instruments. We like to justify our behavior by claiming that we are buying them for one another or the kids. It works well for us.
