If I had only my '62 AVRI strat, I'd have everything I "need", electric-wise. I've accumulated a few guitars in my 46 years of playing and i enjoy them all. But I don't have nearly as many as the Internet heroes I see who have only been playing a short time but already have a guitar museum in their house. I just don't get it. There is Gear Acquisition Syndrome, which we all understand, but then there is Gear Acquisition Sickness.

Something else I wanted to add - over the years I have come to learn that if you've got only one guitar and you try to make it sound like every other instrument, you will learn a lot more about your axe. I've used my '62 strat at just about every jam session and gig for the past couple of years. It's not a Les Paul, but if I don't make you forget that it's not a Les Paul, then I haven't done my job.

I have 4 guitars and one bass, listed in my sig.

My favorite is my 62 Jazzmaster.

If I could afford to add my collection it would be an American Strat, Jaguar, Telecaster, and a Les Paul. Do I NEED any of them, nope!

Jerry

I'm one of those guys who hasn't been playing long, but I own 3 ATM.... started with an epi LP special II plus top.... then realized I wanted higher quality and went with my mim standard strat plus top.... then grabbed a squier vintage modified jazz bass to learn a little on.... I am just learning so I don't need any of them... but I like the LP and love the strat. I also enjoy the bass and feel that it has helped me learn some things... quality instruments are important in learning imho because it makes u want to play more... if someone has the money and it makes them happy to have I say go for it.

Will probably grab an acoustic soon (thinking about a Taylor big baby or maybe a hellcat) to have something I can fool around with when not wanting to plug in... and I would love a better amp too.... and eventually I want to do my own parts build for fun... that's my two cents I guess as long winded as it was....

I've got 8, but the question is how many I need so it's pretty simple
N + 1 (N being the number of guitars I have at any one time)
or
D - 1 (D being the number at which point my wife will divorce me)

My latest addition was a 2013 Am Deluxe Strat, just last week.

That D can be an unpredictable number if I recall correctly.
New Strat sounds nice, V neck?

The problem is that when N reaches D, N becomes N/2.

Honestly, you can't compare a few slabs of wood with some strings and electronics with a flesh and blood woman.
A guitar can't be picked up for two drinks at the local watering hole.
A guitar won't complain if you come home with another guitar.
A guitar will look better with age.
A guitar likes the same music that you do.
A guitar won't become to heavy to sit on your lap.
A guitar doesn't spend hours on the phone with other guitars.
A guitar won't refuse to wear a G string because it makes it look fat.
A guitar doesn't fake squealies.
When you get rid of a guitar, you get money.

...ummm....not too heavy to sit on your lap....won't refuse to wear a G string....doesn't fake squealies....

Ya gotta spend more time at the "Gentlemen's Clubs" or you'll never understand arth1's analogy!

OTOH, When a man has a real, long term relationship with a woman, you see her fine points, understand her humanity and accept her as your lifetime mate. Then "fake squealies" are appreciated. :D

Fortunately, all of arth1's insightful points in terms of a guitar are accurate, but not sentimental. Whether it's the best or worst, it's yours and pretty durn good for what it does... 8)

...and it can give you REAL SQUEALIES!! 8) :D  :D 8)

At least by posting something on here I may have saved myself money on marriage counselling in the future:lol:
Actually I gotta be honest my wife is really supportive of my obsession with guitars but still D-1 might be one of those numbers you hit without warning.

BTW the new Am Deluxe is an HSH. I've got an Am std SSS which I love, went out bought a Les Paul a while ago but I've never really bonded with it. There's nothing wrong with it, setup is perfect and I can't fault it, just no emotional connection.

So when the opportunity came along I had a plan to replace the LP and bought an Am deluxe, Sunset Metallic (I love the colour), but went and bought a Am Deluxe HSH loaded pickguard. I'm not keen on the LSR Roller nut on the off the shelf HSH, and wanted something a bit unique. The new twinhead humbuckers are awesome, so versatile. Everything from BB King to Nickelback.

Hmm... I think I might need to use you for my therapist. Do you have any sort of degree? The only music degree I have is a certain degree of GAS, though I have taken strong steps to overcome this issue in my life in the last year - better late than never, right?

I have been married to the same wonderfully understanding woman for 44 years now and she finally gave up trying to curb my guitar addiction about 7-8 years ago. I think she decided that needing to buy guitars was a better problem than smoking, drinking, womanizing, recreational drugs, STDs and all the other stuff that some guys (especially musicians?) deal with. For whatever reason, I have never had to deal with any of the above issues, which helped me to rationalize all the guitar purchases.

I love my wife, but I also love guitars. I usually buy guitars only with gig money, another good way to rationalize the acquisitions. In 2012 I was gigging a LOT and I bought 22 guitars that year. Last year, I went cold turkey until November when I broke down and bought 1 guitar, a very nice Ibanez. So far this year, no guitar purchases.

So how many guitars do I need? I think I might have reached that point, which is, I think, an even 70. I have sold a few guitars through the years, but for me it's a lot easier to BUY guitars than it is to SELL them. As of right now, I am feeling no urge to buy another guitar. I am starting to think about letting some of my collection go, but only time will tell.

P.S. Someone mentioned taking one of four guitars to gigs and every now and then taking two guitars and switching off. When I was playing every single weekend way back in the Good Old Days of the 90s, I never took fewer than four guitars to gigs, though that included one acoustic-electric. Different sets, different guitars. This year I am only playing out about 8-10 times a month and I only carry two guitars. Hey, I'm getting up there in years!

I can't play very well, so I don't really need any, but I have about 10.

I have about 9 but in all fairness, I'm thinking that I'm beginning to hoard.. in actual fact, I only need an electric and an acoustic.

2005 American Deluxe Strat
1990 Stratocaster Ultra
1993 Stratocaster Plus
Squier VM Tele Thinline
Takamine electro acoustic
Yamaha 12 string
2008 Standard Strat locking Trem
Charvel San Dimas MIJ
1991 Fender Talon V

A bunch of pedals.. Hotrod Deluxe amp etc..

Would be different if they were rarities or collectable. :)

I have three and for my needs that's not bad. I might get one or two more, but that's it tbh.

Carvin DC125C - Not super versatile (single bridge humbucker), but great for a metal lead player. The coil tap gives a little bit of single coiled jangle, but it's not the same...

Schecter 7 string - Because 7 string, I like it and it was cheap.

'95 Strat Plus - Because single coil.

I'd like another Strat with hot single coils, too, but that's all I see myself wanting to add :)
