I "need" all the guitars that I can get and that goes for amps and stomp boxes too. Although if absolutely necessary I could get by with just one,I am a hopelessly obsessive tone junky and just want to seek out all the tones that I can possibly get from a guitar. Even guitars of the same model and year with the same specs can have markedly different tone signatures. The same goes for amps-probably more so-because there are so many components and each one with probably it's own little nuances that there will be slight and even quite noticeable differences between seemingly identical models. You'll often hear of guys like Clapton and Eric Johnson especially trying out several amps of the same model before settling on the one that "speaks" to him.The same can be said for guitars and I have seen that myself many times.

Randy Bachman went over a list of the "minimum" guitarsenal needed by a serious musician on his Vinyl Tap program and spent a few weeks with each episode featuring a particular make and model. If my poor memory serves me correctly they were: The Fender Strat,Telecaster,Electric XII,Jaguar and Jazzmaster,Gibson Les Paul,SG and 335, Rickenbacker 6 and 12 string electrics,Martin and Gibson acoustics and the Gretsch Tennessean type with the Hilotrons and the Country Gentleman types with the Filtertrons. There are likely more, that I may have omitted but as I remember it, that was his list of guitars needed to have all the bases covered if someone wanted to cover the whole guitar tonal spectrum.

I have 33 guitars and about 14 amps so far and with my tone addiction I will no doubt keep adding to it until I join that jam session in the sky...lol.

I have now purchased my 10th guitar. I've got my bases covered with a Strat, Tele, Les Paul, a couple of guitars with P90s an acoustic and a bass.
I think I need to stop for a while. Yeah right!

The answer is very simple.
Every guitarist always needs just one more guitar.
I rest my case!

Acoustic: 1 Ovation, 1 El Degas...? (Never seen another El Degas, but a well made acoustic!)

Bass: 1 Rick

That's all I need...."need" may be a strong word, but I am a happy man!! :D

Of all the guitars for me to neglect to mention,I didn't mention the Epiphone Casino with its 335 type Gibson body and the beautifully sounding, sparkling P-90 pickups.I own 2 Casinos-a John Lennon 1965 and a natural finish Indonesian made model so I'd have one that at least resembles the "Revolution" model. The 1965 is tied with my '65 Strat as my favourite guitar-every guitarsenal should have one!

Here's an interesting take on that question answered, in this 4 min. StewMac video, by Acoustic Master Dakota Dave Hull:

(I was intrigued by his Miking technique, String Mute and Acoustic Wah Wah Stomp Pedal)

http://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Trade_Secrets/Why_do_you_have_so_many_guitars.html?lac_guid=3e862601-babc-44d5-a855-ebd3acb7f2c7&utm_campaign=ts0223&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter

BTW, I've decided that for my current needs I need one electric and one acoustic.

I may rue the day!

Actually, if one of these fell in my lap I might have to reconsider. :D

1961 Strat, Tahitian Coral
1960 Twin Amp. Blonde

From Guitar Shop TV:

Great Guitar & Amp Combinations - 16

WOW, we're really rolling out the good stuff this summer!---Check this incredible and ULTRA RARE combo- a1961 Fender Stratocaster in Tahitian coral with a 1960 blonde Fender Twin amp - perfect for rock, blues and country!

This Strat has a penciled neck date of 3-61, and features Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with clay dots and a small headstock with spaghetti decal, but what makes it really distinctive is an ultra-rare color. According to an old piece of masking tape attached under the pickguard, the color is Tahitian Coral (a color of the same name was used by Chrysler in the late ‘50s). This non-standard color was not mentioned in any Fender catalogs (the closest official Fender color at the time was Shell Pink, listed from 1960–1963).

The Blonde/Oxblood Fender Twin-Amp is one of the rarest, most collectable Fender amps of all time: it features 2 x 12" Jensen P12N speakers for 85-100 watts of the best blues tone any amp of any era has to offer. Only 500 of these were ever made between 1960 and 1963, it lives up to it's position alongside the Champ and '59 Bassman as the most desirable amp on the planet.

The amp shown does not appear to have its original P12N Jensen's. Those speakers look like D120F JBL's.
