I can't speak for anyone else, but I can only play one at a time!

Seymour Duncan's email had this take on that eternal question.

Lol

If that's Joe Bonamassa then he probably has the money/room for a warehouse full
not to mention the talent to get the most out of them!

Me I fail on all counts, I need 1 or 2 but have about 5. Like you say you can only play
one at a time. FWIW I think having less guitars has actually focused my mind on what I want and right now that's my strat plus and my 87 standard!
:)

Everyone has different preferences, but for me, who is into modern and not vintage, I'd say I can cover all the major bases with 10 to 12. I'm not talking about colors or finishes, just features, like scale length, fretboard type, pickup configuration etc. This is for electrics only, not accoustics. I'm up to 7 and I'm starting to think I don't "need" too many more.
Joe B is the one guy that can use that many guitars and give them all a purpose.

Or a non-reverse Firebird with P90's in Pelham Blue.

My band plays every weekend, so I usually play one of my four different guitars each weekend. That way I don't get bored playing the same one all the time and I always look forward to that weekend's gig. Sometimes I'll have a favorite and play it a few weekends in a row and sometimes I'll play two at one gig. I love the variety.

I have five so far and have one on order, I will not be stopping anytime soon :) They all look, sound, and play different. I also have a hard time selling. They all have memories attached to them or they are something that I put a lot of thought/research into before I purchased. I just can't let them go.

BTW I understand that Randy Bachman has more guitars than Bonamassa does
He (Randy) actually gave back (sold?) half of his Gretsch collection back to Gretsch since they didn't have all the guitars from their history but Bachman did.

That picture is pretty old now of Joe Bonamassa and just some of his guitars, taken something like 2009 (think)
He posts Guitar of the week on his web site found here:
http://jbonamassa.com/joes-guitar-of-the-week/

Joe has been posting pictures of his guitar collection on his twitter account
Joe's latest post on Strat's
To that I say happy 60th to a great invention. #55,56,56,57,58,61,63,65

Interesting responses. No one said, "Just One!".

My GAS had gotten out of hand and I was merciless in disposal, despite sentimental attachment, or so I thought.

Checking my records for THE LAST TWO YEARS the tally stands at:

Current: 3 Fender Strats and an '81 Electra hardtail; and 1 Acoustic - a '99 Taylor. 8)

Sold (approx): 14 Electric and 5 acoustic.

Scrap Heap: 1 Electric and 1 acoustic.

Total: 26 Guitars!

I believe every one needs one Stratocaster, one Telecaster and one Les Paul. These 3 are icons in the music world and should be at the top of everyones list. I have 7 guitars, 3 Strats, 3 Les Pauls and a Telecaster.

Well I've been at this since I was a wee lad, I'm no longer a lad..

There was a day, way back when, when I only had one electric, one acoustic.
But, -- that was some time ago. today, my total count is at 19

Caveats:

one is a wall hanger that someone left on the side of the road on Trash pickup day, (Olympia nylon string.. train wreck? sort of.. but it's playable.)

I have relatives in Florida that we visit from time to time... I picked up a pawn shop acoustic and left it there for the return visits. (Brilliant!!)

one is a 3/4 scale Epi Bass (SGB), I don't play a lot of bass, but, this one came my way for 100 bucks, why not!

the rest are Gibson, Fender, Taylor, USA made instruments, along with some epiphone archtops (one of those is an Elitist Country Gent. fabulous!)

and one old Yari Dreadnaught that was built in 1978, (GREAT guitar) recently had some much needed fret work done, and added a new Fishman Infinity Matrix pickup.

latest arrival came a few days ago.. Seinna Burst Amer. Std Strat.

We haven't discussed amps yet... on second thought, lets not..

As you guys can clearly see I need help...
