Maybe the Volume pot is a linear tape pot instead of a audio tape pot? I can't tell from the pics. Looks like the tone pots say A250k, but can't tell on the volume pot. I would assume they would all be the same, but just something to check.

I am increasingly dissatisfied with all the crackling problems when i use the switch, and the sound dies once i roll the Vol below 5 ...

I am about to buy new pots/switch/cap/jack, but the trouble is i am so lost with all the options. So, guys and girls, i need your help.
since i live in northern Scotland, I am quite limited for choice (some suppliers don't ship to N.Scotland due to shipping costs), but i found these guys in Cornwall offering a set of all the goodies: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PREMIUM-WIRIN ... 58ae5e3060
Q #1: what is the difference between Vintage CTS and 450 Series ?
Q #2: what is the difference between .22 vs .33 vs .47uf ? and
Q #3: why do they offer combinations of TWO caps?
Q #4: what is the difference between linear and audio taper vol pot?

...yes, i could search for detailed info online myself, but i really don't have much time for this lately, and someone might have the answers handy....
thank you

I can relate to getting "lost with all the options". :)

You've got an MIJ guitar so you'll probably have to enlarge the holes in your pickguard slightly to accommodate the slightly larger 3/8" shafts vs the original metric. Use a reamer or sandpaper over a tapered paint brush shaft carefully. (Recommended by Ceri)

The CTS 450 series were new to me but the specs are good at +/-10% tolerance from 250K goal, so I'd get those. The vintage refers to the dimple on the bottom of the pot.

I'm not getting into the capacitor affecting tone argument, I'd recommend getting the .022 Orange Drop and forget about Pairs.

I just use Audio Taper Pots, there are also long discourses on this application and how the human ear/brain "hears".

Good luck!

thanks danagos, i will go for vintage cts 250 and orange .22uf :)

i'm contemplating buying a new pickguard for these guys, because I'm not that fond of mint green whatsitcalled that i have. I really like an aged pearl color... but will it fit my JP Fender? MIM or MIA?

That one, being MIJ itself, ought to fit your guitar just fine...and it has the "vintage" offset screw location that yours requires. (left of the middle pickup)

Whether or not you have to ream the pot openings is still a question.

+1

Not only does it have the alternate screw location (a la the '62-type Strat guitars) but the screw holes for the pickups and selector switch are countersunk to allow use of the correct oval-head screws.

in case anyone new to MIJ Reissues is unsure about pickups ID, here's some info I found:
"The US pickups fitted to Strats and Teles have cloth covered wire back to the pots. So, as far as Strats and Teles are concerned, plastic covered wire equals Japanese, cloth covered wire equals US. Also, Strat pick-guards loaded with Texas Specials have a red circular sticker on the underside. Those loaded with US Vintage pups do not."

Looks like you're ready to do some modding Marek. Let us see what's happening with all those new parts when they come in. :)

That's good information from John Blackman, too.

That's interesting, it looks as good as those he shows on his site. How do you rate him as a seller?

i'd say 9 out of 10.
The communication was excellent, he replied to my emails within couple of hours, so i knew exactly what was happening. once i decided to buy that start, i paid him late afternoon and the following morning the guitar was on its way and the next day it was already by my door: gig bag in a big cardboard box, very well packed in bubblewrap. the guitar was in tune, nice and clean.
there is a little ding in the middle of the back, which i didn't see in the photos and he hasn't mentioned it either, but upon discovery, I didn't get a heart attack and was feeling rather indifferent. this is because i will add more dings in the future, and the guitar will still play great, I'm sure!

That's life, a good attitude towards a Used Guitar.

There's the inevitable moment when a new, mint purchase gets the first ding...after tears and recriminations, life goes on.

I'm surprised that the guitar was in tune right out of the box. I always detune one before shipping to reduce the pressure on the neck. I was taught that it was safer that way, especially in a gig bag.

But as long as yours arrived safely, that's what matters. :D
