Entering the world of Fender with an MIJ '62 Reissue

Image
Neck feel is poetry to me :D
the middle pickup needs luthier's attention, as it's way too quiet.

Hi Marianeq

MIJ and CIJ guitars are usually well finished excellent guitars, i have a similar colour 58 version albeit with a maple fretboard.
One thing that can crop up is "indifferent" electrics. I ended up changing out the
selector switch, pots and while i was in there changing the pickups too although
the pups wern't faulty on mine.

Sweet looking guitar, congrats.

The middle pickup is too quiet? Did you try raising it yet? :?:

raising pickup(s) didn't improve it....
I think it's a wiring problem either on pickup end or 5/way switch... but i don't know much about it, so i will have to get it sorted soon. These things happen so i'm not that concerned.

Those do not look like Texas Specials to me -- that set uses a RP/RW middle pickup that is usually indicated by yellow and black lead-in wires, and the bridge pickup should be marked on the bottom of the bobbin with a red dot. The pots and switch look to be original MIJ components but that tone cap is unfamiliar to me.

The guitar is a gorgeous example of Fuji-Gen woodworking.

i found that same capacitor on this MIJ strat...
Also, the wires on my pickups look like those on vintage pickups:

I can't tell from the picture if you're wired correctly and even then you might have a "cold solder" joint not making good contact. Below is a good diagram to check your wiring against with an import switch.

Take some DCR measurements of each coil with a multi-meter and compare your results with published pickup specs for Texas Specials on Fender's products page. Then study the spec's for the other sets shown. That may reveal what set they are (or that they're not Fender pickups at all).

Assuming mine had texas specials in it as it said it had these are "them" removed to
hopefully fit in a different guitar someday.

Check the 5 way switch, the contacts were u/s on mine in one position, that along with scratchy pots that no amount of contact cleaner would help meant they all went in the bin!

And here's what i found:

I double checked for any telling signs that would allow me to name those pups...
the bobbins feel like made of ceramic, and the wire is of different color in Middle and Neck:

Here's a prototypical example of Texas Special pickups installed in a Strat pickguard......

Note the color-coded bobbins.
