Fender is now making it possible to build your own Strat online and have it shipped to you.

This is not the Custom Shop, but it's pretty sweet!

I've been doing that for nearly seven years now. At about half the price.

Anybody care to post a link?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Kinda cool, but to me the options are too limited.

Top of the page, click "Guitars", then at the top of that page click "Design Your Own".

http://www.fender.com/american-design/

Yeah, limited and a bit pricey. :|

For only $2,199.99 I built a Mary Kaye with soft V neck contour, gold hdwre. & Tweed case.

It was a LOT easier than 53magnatone makes it out to be!

^^ Not sure what you mean by difficult, but did you buy the body cut, routed, sanded and ready for finish :?: or did you buy a 7' x 14" x 2-3/4" baulk :?:

I'm not putting a ready to assemble parts guitar together, but rather cutting, routing, sanding, finishing a body to the specs I want which is very different. In addition I also prefer certain fastening methods which are superior to the primitive 4 screws and plate.
As a woodworker I have the tools and the ability to achieve what I want rather than settle on a set list of options... What does make it difficult is the time needed to do it right...
With a full college course load in addition to work and all, my available time is compressed and I would prefer to achieve small incremental progress instead of a train wreck...

Difficult isn't really the terminology I would have described the process, but neither is it simple Plug and Play.... Building your own Stratocaster's isn't for everyone, but it also isn't just a simple process.....

I had thought that was an obvious jest. I apologize if I offended you.

I LOVE this idea. But the options are too limited. Not enough body options, colors, maple tops etc. I wish the fender select bodies and necks were there. I'd love to build a flame top, the color I want, their new channeled neck, with the pups I want and NO NITRO and NOT AGED PARTS. It's becoming very hard to get a guitar that doesn't have Aged parts or some sort of ugly piss color yellow.

This is what they should have called the "Select" series. If ya get what I'm saying. You "select" what YOU want.

Fender Select.

Love the option for custom engraved plate too. It is pricey though, and since you won't actually see the guitar before it ships, that's a bummer too. When it comes to wood grains and whatnot I want to see it, before I buy it.

+1

Not as limited as the previous "Guitar Builder", though! :)

The old guitar builder has only the Strat body and neck/headstock shapes.

With the American Designer you can choose between Telecaster, Stratocaster, Precision and Jazz Basses.

Unfortunately you cannot tweak your design at your heart's delight. The American Designer won't allow you to hot-rod the Precision Bass with a PJ configuration or a dual humbucker layout.

I think it's a great idea, but a few more options would help. It will cost me about $300 less to build a Warmouth partscaster with more of the options that I want but no Fender decal. I know that decal is worth something but if the guitar isn't the way I want it, then no deal.

I agree there. What if I wanted to make a Tele with a Humbucker in the neck, or get some binding?
