Your images do not show but nail polish and car paint are but two of the many options in conjunction with very fine sandpaper and some sort of lacquer/poly topcoat.
Depending on your skills in these areas you may end up with a result looking worse than when you started :D

Or... with the right materials, the proper knowledge, practice and patience... you could end up with a repair which is hardly noticeable.

The key is patience and it's a good idea to first practice on another chipped piece of wood to learn technique, maybe even a couple practice runs. Use tools as little as possible - the more hand sanding/rubbing the better.

If it's just the clearcoat/poly/lacquer, this is much easier than paint/lacquer.

I've done lots of invisible stone chip repairs to automotive paint (lacquer, poly, acrylic). It's the same techniques and the most important thing is not to try and rush it.

cheers!

+1 for both responses. It's easiest to color match Black, but do it knowing that you'll probably mess your first try up REAL BAD, the next Not As Bad and so on. :(

Get some pictures up and we'll try to give you more specific advice, knowing that the result is ON YOUR HEAD!

The right color base and correct thickness of Super Glue, Scraper and Sandpapers and lots of Patience can actually get a pretty good result. :D

...or you can just call it a "relic"!

Success isn't based on how much Money you have;

it's How Many GUITARS You HAVE!!!

While I cannot see your pics, I say leave it as is. Chips are like tatoos... They tell a story....

That seems like it would be a tough fix, fairly obvious position and tough color match.

Maybe it's time to accept the beauty of graceful aging.

Hi,
I recently did a paint chip repair. You really need to be patient. I filled this chip:

And the result is this:
Image

You need fine sand paper (1000 / 2000 / car polish). If it's a MiM Strat, the lacquer must be polyurethane lacquer. Most of the lacquer that is sold for guitar repairs is nitro lacquer, so you cannot use it to fill a poly finish.
The most important thing is, that you need the exact color. I would recommend to go to a paintshop and let them distinguish the color with a color spectrometer. Those machines can identify your color up to 99%. I tried it with a color chart and as you can see, it is not even close.

I cleaned the spot and filled it up a bit with primer, depending how deep it is. Then I started to paint layers with a fine paintbrush. And after some days, I wet-sanded the spot and polished it.

Maybe you can use some of his technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTVScFJoe24

OR

You could ask a car paintshop for smart repair.

WTF?!?

Poly Lacquer?Spectrometer?SmartRepair? It's a freakin' chip! WALK IT OFF!!

David I'm sure you mean well, but those fixes are prohibitively expensive in comparison to the worth of all but the most expensive guitars and then you have to consider devaluation of your guitar.

Neither of your images worked either. These are my suggestions for posting pictures:

Join a (free) service like Photobucket, Flickr, etc. Upload your pictures there. Then using their "Direct" link, copy the url for the picture.

Then in your Forum Reply, copy the url inside the brackets created when you click the "Img" button on the header.

There's also a "Preview" button at the bottom, so you can check to see if you've done it right before you post.

I spend 20$ for it. It is not perfect, but I do understand that people want to fix it. It is NOT a big deal and it doesn't need to be expensive. A spectrometer can find your color code, so that any paintshop can mix the exact color of your guitar. Smart repair is called smart, because it is a low cost thing. If you just fill the chip, sand and polish it, you won't see much of it afterwards. You just need to be patient.

If it's a Mexican Strat it must be polyurethane lacquer, this is important because nitro lacquer contains acetone and both lacquers won't stick together. So be careful with nail polish. There are too many people who have absolutely no clue of it, so I wouldn't give a thing about it.
I also found a guy, who offered me to mix a can my exact color tone with nitro lacquer (for 10$), if I send him a paint chip. But as it is poly lacquer used for the MiM Strats, it didn't work for me.

In my opinion, 10-30$ is totally fine. It is a white body, so it shouldn't be too hard to fix it. It is not magic, just using a paint brush and sandpaper.

He ask for an easy solution, I replied -> That's it!
Btw, if I'm not blind, it is a newer Mexican Stratocaster, so there is no need to talk about serious devaluation. It's his guitar, if he wants to fix it, that's fine. Not everybody likes a roadworn or vintage style.

Thanks for your advise, I checked the preview and everything was okay. Maybe because I had my dropbox still open.

If you don't mind me saying... there us a subtle difference in the finishes ....many ( not all) of the mim are polyester and the mia polyurethane. :D

Yeah it is, I know. It's a shame...
As I mentioned before, I tried to distinguish my color using a color chart and then I picked the closest tone I could get. That's why you need a spectrometer that identifies your color tone.
