Hey everyone I'm looking at buying a Fender Strat but I've got some questions.

Firstly, what is the difference between a Fender American Standard Strat HSS and a Fender American Deluxe Strat HSS?

Secondly, how well does the tremolo system work? Will I need to have a floyd rose installed?

Lastly, I was thinking of putting a Bill Lawrence L-90 pickup in the bridge and was wondering what you guys thought of that.

Thanks in advance!

Compare the specs here..

At the very least you will have to modify the pickguard to install the L90
Hope this helps. :D

You'll need to perform some major alterations in the body if you plan installing an original Floyd.

With the mini Floyd Rose bridge those alterations are not required, Fender discontinued production of those bridges in 2007.

The American Deluxe HSS has already the LSR nut and locking tuners, just swap the stock push-in bridge with the mini Floyd and slap a deluxe backplate on the guitar.

Thank you both for your replies. This is probably yet another stupid question so I apologize in advance, if I got the SSS model would I still need to make changes to the guitar at all? And if I went with the HSS model what exactly would I need to do to alter the pickguard?

Also, your saying to remove the tremolo system and install a mini floyd?

You would have to file the edges on the corners around the humbucker cutout to accommodate the L90 and drill a hole for the screw mount.
There could be other minor complications with the deluxe since it has the S1 and I am also not sure of the phasing of the L 90 in relation to the N3s (that may not be much of an issue but something to be aware of if you wire one in) 250k pots on the strat as well
Those mini floyds are rare and as a consequence epensive so just go for the normal tremelo and see how that works for you.
The sss has subtle differences, obviously no bucker and no lsr on the deluxe.
I recommend you try all four models both deluxe and std sss and hss. :D

Fender phased out the Mini Floyds in early 2007 when they dropped the locking bridge option from the American Deluxe HSS. The assembly was available as a separate accessory until the second half of that year. Since then the production of Fender deluxe locking tremolo systems ceased.

If you've enough bucks and lots of luck you can find and purchase the Mini Floyd Rose bridge assembly from eBay.

As good as those mini Floyd's were, they still didn't really address the main purpose of the 'locking' issue..

It needed a locking nut, as the tension behind the nut vs in front is the reason behind tuning stability with trems. Which is why Fender installed a LSR nut. Even still, with the LSR- it didn't entirely address it and locking tuners are meant to make string changes easier.. Not improve tuning stability- even if it does vs standard tuners.. But not to the extent of the intended dive-bomb heavy use return to pitch of a Floyd.

My opinion is that the design needed improvement- die cast saddles weren't the best (equal to the FR special really) and with Fenders outsourcing policies- the mini Floyd was doomed.

I say, go for a full FR install- OP would be better off with a Floyd Rose Original Trem. It's just the routing that needs to be done and setup- Donny will know what to do but it's really not a major

..or buy a Charvel. They aren't a fender, but they are better lol

Buy the Strat for what it is, however the cost of retrofitting a Floyd Rose isn't worth it...
IF you are contemplating reselling the guitar at a future time, you will find it very difficult to recoup 60% of your initial purchase cost... Add to that the FR's hardware and install cost and that Strat. will be a very big loss...

There are many Jackson's and Charvel's out there designed exactly for that kind of playing..
They can be had for a reasonable price...
Do get a Strat but the amount of mods you want to perform on a Deluxe is not a good idea...
If you still want to do this to a Stratocaster then find a used standard or a MIM and then go for it.
An altered Deluxe will not have many buyer's, there is a current thread similar to this in this section...

Also before thinking about changing pups, what are you using for an amp :?:
I'm using a Pro Junior, 4 different Strats. one with SCN's, one with Tex Mex, another with standard and one with an HSS. None of these are special but cranked I can get either a Matthias Jabs Michael Schenker distorted range or a Knopfler clean sound... I do run it direct, no peripherals, just guitar, cord and amp....
Something to think about before modding n search of that Holy Grail ....
