I was following an auction on ebay recently for what I think must have been a NOS replacement neck for a Strat Plus.

Has the LSR Nut rout, and dual pin holes for the Schaller locking tuners. It was Mfg. in '96, never screwed on a body and it was shipped with no finish on it.

I found that strange. I wrote to Fender Consumer Relations and Paul told me there was no record of it.

What do y'all think?

Thanks, odd to find one unfinished, at least in my experience.

I'll take a moment to admit that I watch your "signature" of Donald Rumsfeld performing tricks, over and over. Never gets tiresome! Brilliant!! :D :D :D

It can't be too rare as they have boxes printed up with "unfinished" on them.

If we want to question the authenticity of the part, couldn't we also question the authenticity of the box?

   Good one Mark! That would be fiendishly clever!

I never questioned the authenticity of the neck, sending it out "Unfinished" seemed odd...

...but then...

True, true, it's a mystery. Where's Rob when we need him?

Guess I'll watch a little of the Donald Rumsfeld Variety Show 33 Second Loop and ponder it awhile!

That's true, perhaps it's more amusing being a counterpoint to his controversial 2nd term as US Sec'ty. of Defense. I find it amusing!

Date stamps on neck ends and body routs/neck pockets are said to provide more reliable authenticity than serial numbers which are often randomly assigned to guitar necks and neck plates. I suspect that this neck would not have been documented until paired with a body which became a finished guitar. In addition, we know that there's a date certain beyond which Fender's records have been lost. I don't think this is the case here, being '96. I'd love to know the shipping date on that label, though. This is something I expect that Xhefri would be interested in, but he's traveling presently. For future reference, subjects of this interest are best posted on the "Friends of Strat Plus/Strat Ultra'' thread. Prevents scatter.

FWIW, I didn't win this auction and it wasn't listed as a Plus neck but that became obvious after seeing the Nut rout and date.

I really didn't think of the "Fans of Strat Plus and Strat Ultra" 81 page thread, my interest was in the NOS Unfinished aspect of this neck and if anyone had any insight.

I have a theory that this neck was ordered "Unfinished".

The buyer MAY have wanted to paint the Headstock to match a guitar then finish it himself. There's a 3T Burst Plus with matching Headstock that shows up on ebay regularly with an outrageous price. Maybe a Lottery winner has it now! 8)

...then the drugs wore off and he threw away the broken neck, sold the loaded body and drove his volkswagen van to the nearest army recruiting station.....

I doubt we'll ever know.

Back to the "Donald (doIlooklikeawarcriminal) Rumsfeld" show!

Fortunately there is a pic of the Neck End date.

Here's my take on that. I've only purchased two guitars through eBay. On those, I pulled the plug on the asking price. My philosophy is that once I've satisfied myself that the asking price is justifiable within a couple of hundred dollars I'm getting to the front of the line. If I seriously want to own it, I've no intention of letting some '2 seconds before the bell hacker' who wants to buy it just to flip it, and gets his rocks off in an adrenalin rush from the win, beat me out of it.

I agree with your philosophy Doc. I don't mind paying a little extra for what I really want or need either.

Unfortunately, many auctions, like the one in this thread, don't have a BIN (Buy It Now) price. Then I weigh its worth, make a bid, wait and see.

I didn't NEED this neck, I have an excellent Neck on my Plus and it's my preferred Maple fretboard. I put in a fair bid, knowing how much work was necessary to finish it and what it's probable worth would be.

If it had a Clapton soft V back contour, that would have been a different story! Then I would have NEEEEDED THAT NECK!!

Well....much to my dismay...there's only one guitar in the stable you and I are going to find that neck on. After that, it's the chop shops.
