I would suggest going with a good SQUIER until you are certain about your guitars.

+1, vote for the Classic Vibe (The new Anniversary model in Aztec gold with gold hardware - cheez what a blingblinger...) plus a setup by a pro plus a good amplifier.
Fender family will grow on you: in a few years time you will eventually have a half dozen guitars.

Regarding all those MIA/MIM/MadeElsewhere conversations: didn't SRV's Lenny have an Asian neck..?

Been looking at guitars for several months. Started playing 2 weeks ago. Got excited learning new chords, though i could do them faster. When switching chords, I am having so much trouble. Yesterday I was trying to learn some fun Jazz/Blue licks, and I literally tried for 3-4 hours straight on this 1 small like 8-10 note lick and I didnt have it down. Switching fingers, strings got me. I suddenly got discouraged :(

Felt like the world felt apart not being able to progress.

On a side note, why do I see some guitars metal hardware get so much rust? Are all of them prone to rusting? Are they made in mexico? Will the made in USA ones rust like that? Looks pretty bad. Anyway I think I will go to stores try them out first, then wait until I can get a few licks or at least songs down before I jump and buy a guitar. but for now possibly a MIM Strato.

BTW not sure if I am allowed to mention BST here, but i saw one Mystic Blue MIA Strato for 799 last night "Shelf-Stock" condition. Includes shipping and everything. Is that a good deal? Sounds legit... :?:

thank you all for the great feedback and support guys

I started playing about 2 years ago (and I'm 63 now!). I started with a cheap acoustic that was hard to play. A buddy lent me his PRS SE, and I decided to get an electric guitar, but as a beginner, not wanting to layout too much $$ as I didn't know if I was going to stay with it. I did a bunch of research, and determined that, as a beginner, I didn't know if I wanted single coil pickups, humbuckers, or a combination. So I decided that I was going to get a guitar with both. I decided I was either going to go with a Jackson Dinky or a Squire Affinity Fat strat. Sent to GC to test them out on a black Friday. Turns out GC didn't have a fat strat available, but did have the Jackson. Turns out the Jackson was a limited edition run just for GC. I think about 250 where made (It's a shuriken model). So with my black Friday discount, got it for about $210.

Played it for awhile, but decided I wanted to get my hands on a strat, as the single coils on the Jackson where kind of flat; the humbucker (bridge position) sounded nice. Found a used MIM (early 90's) in black with maple neck for $250.

Been playing that (strictly a hobbiest) for awhile now. Decided to put in new tremolo block, pots/switch and new capacitor, as the sustain on the B and high E strings isn't as good as the Jackson. Sounds a bit better now. Going to put a new graftech nut on it next.

So, bottom line is that, as everyone has stated, try them out in the stores before deciding, avoid the cheapest, and get something that, if you decide you want to improve on it, you can.

Steel rusts, in MIA, MIM, MElsewhere guitars. (BTW, does anybody know the origin of steel in Squiers and Fenders..?)
How fast & how bad, that depends on the alloy, its coating and the combination of sweat, alcohol & other stuff it is exposed to. (And the main alternative, brass, also corrodes, so no help there.)
Many (like yours truly) regard the age marks as honourable battle scars. For others, there are cleaning and protecting products. Use them regularly, and start before the rust hits.

Thanks for the info! BST refers to buy sell trade. I was going to post the link of the MIA Strat that I almost went for last night, but not sure if it was appropriate for this thread or forum. Anyway, 799 shipped sounded like a good deal for an MIA. Since they are 1800+ nowadayz. Comes with Hard Case...oh man...I want one even if I dont play guitar!!! Thats how much of a FENDER FAN I AM!

Regarding Rust, I usually replace every screw possible for stainless steel replacements on my guitars when I get them. The normal screws are always the first to start rusting.

What about an amp? Do you already have 1? I wouldn't suggest spending the entire budget on a guitar if you don't have an amp.
My first real fender was a US Standard Strat. I went in to buy a mexi but got talked into the US. Got the sales pitch about holding value, quality, blah, blah, blah. I've regretted it ever since as I never bonded with the guitar and it just sits. I tried 5 different pickup combo's and it still sits. Since buying it, I've added 9 Fender's to the collection, all used, some US some Mexi. The mexi's get 80% of the playing time.
The quality of the US strat's and tele's I have exceeds the mexi's, but I'm more comfortable playing my mim guitars.
If you choose to buy used and pay the right price, when it's time to upgrade you could sell it and not lose any $.

Hi thank you for the reply. I have an Amp with the starter pack from my ESP F10 metal guitar set my friend has given to me. He basically never even played it much, he claimed it was too metal. I cant tell if the AMP sucks or what not at all, but there are alot of little noises that come out even when I dont play anything or have any pick ups Turned on. I was planning to buy a Mustang I-II, then pair up with a mexican Strato. May just wait till black friday and see what happens. I want one with a nice hard case, because I have looked, and the cases themselves sell well over 100. I think it would be a great deal if I had bought that shelf stock MIA American Stratocaster :( for 799 shipped :(
