Hi Guys,

New here. I currently own a F10 ESP, looking to get a Fender. I mean, I MUST GET A FENDER. however there are too many versions of the stratocaster; Squier, MIM, One made in China now which is cheaper, USA made....Been told the Squier by a professional guitarist that is not that great especially a used Strat can be had pretty cheap.

I enjoy playing Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll tunes. I am just a beginner, started literally 2 weeks ago. Any input would be helpful.

Or do you think I should go for a Tele?

Hi,
the only sure way of knowing what is good for you is by going to a few local music shops and try some guitars. Even just by holding a guitar, you may be closer to choosing what suits you. If you are a beginner, then you probably won't tell the difference between a good set of pickups and $@!&#* ones, so to make sure you're not buying something you won't like the sound of, plug it in, strum it for a while, play your favorite song and you should have a much better idea about your choices and options.
Squiers ARE good guitars, for their price, however i don't recommend bottom line models, as they don't last long. Squire Classic Vibe is a great guitar and it might be the best thing your money can buy (if you dont want to splash out too much).
I myself am on the market for my first real Stratocaster and i have been to several stores trying out different models and even the same models but from different shops (as they tend to vary in terms of tones they produce), and I'm still not entirely sure which one suits me :) but the process of finding that "one" is a lot of fun, indeed!

The CV's are a lot of instrument for only a modest outlay. Probably one of FMIC's best kept secrets.

Well, if you don't mind buying used, you can usually find MIM Strats for under $300 on Craigslist depending on your area.

Great insights guys. I have yet to even learn one single song yet  but I am very excited to see my own progress, as I can play 1 or 2 chords now. And switching isnt as hard as I first started 2 weeks ago. Looking through all the youtube videos the sound that struck me the most of all the guitars are either a Schecter SD 2 - 24 or a Fener Tele or Strat. The sounds they make are unbelievable. Esp the Tele

Whatever you decide on, make sure you enjoy playing it. Many people give up way too quickly because they have a crap guitar or the guitar they have isn't set up to the player's comfort level. If possible go to a guitar store and play as many as possible to get an idea of what suits you. Craigslist is great for used guitars, just don't get suckered. If you have a question, take some pics and post them on here and get community feedback.
If you don't mind me asking, what is your budget?

Absolutely!

The forum membership's only vested interest in any used guitar purchase lies in making sure a new player/buyer doesn't get ripped off.

The 60th Ann '50s model seems really nice, and for only $400 might be an excellent first guitar.

Any of the above mentioned are good. One to steer clear of... a Bullet. Total crap.... waste of money regardless of how cheap you can find one.
Also... if you go into GC or Sam $@! they're going to try and talk you into a Deluxe... go there after you've been at it a few years... but right now... Classic Vibe... used Mexi standard etc... is a great choice.

To that short list I'd also add the Affinity line.

Hi guys, my budget is 400-500. After reading some MIM and MIA comparisons by some boardmembers here, I think I am more inclined to spend more now than regret later since I am spending big money anyway. Max now will be 800 out the door for hopefully an american made new guitar? DOnt the new American made guitars cost like 1200 something?

Buying a piece of musical gear is similar to buying a home......

It makes more economic sense to grow into it than to grow out of it.

You've made a wise decision IMO.

You can probably get one of the Nitro series strats or an American Special series for that price.

Well, I take that back. I just checked the price on an American Special and they cost a lot more than I thought.

Here's the nitro one though, it's $799 at GC but you might be able to get it for under $800 other places as well.

I would suggest that you take your time to find the best for you. Check the feel of the neck, fret size, sound of pickups, looks. Sometimes it takes some experience to find out what you like. Good luck. :D

The problem is because you are also new to this you yourself may not know what you will want in a guitar further up the players learning curve. So I would not spend big bucks until you have worked out what you want as a more skilled player. If playing guitar becomes your thing then trust me you will be buying more of them later on. This one won't be your only one in that case so I would suggest going with a good SQUIRE until you are certain about your guitars. Once you know what you really want in a guitar, money/cost will be a mere stepping stone.
