Hi,
I want to adjust the truss rod on my Classic Player 60s Strat, and have read an article suggesting that the truss rod may be of the early 60s 'cross screw' type, which would require using a special screw driver (9mm thin head) in order to avoid stripping the screw after a couple of uses.

Is this true, or can one use a regular hex key or screw driver of some sort to adjust the CP 60s truss rod?

If so, what is the correct key/driver to use (measurement)?

Also, what is the appropriate size screw driver to adjust the intonation screws?

Thanks,
drutgat

The truss rod adjust is at the body end of the neck, and is the same "x" pattern as on vintage guitars. You can use a large flat blade screwdriver to adjust the truss rod. The intonation screws are Phillips, use a screwdriver that fits the screws.

Thanks, Shimmilou,
I had read that the heads of most large flat blade screwdrivers are too thick to go into the vintage style truss rods, but obviously if you have experience of this, I will take your word for it.

Also found this here on the Fender website
http://www.fender.com/accessories/care-cleaning/fender-custom-shop-tool-kit-by-cruztools-black/
and think that I will buy it.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Relic G Man,
Many thanks for your reply.

Actually, that is where I saw the article in the first place that prompted me to ask the question!

They also have the 'proper' screwdriver - the 'Standard driver' (very thin head, 9mm in width), mentioned in the link that you sent, and they have a great article on setting a guitar up, too http://www.cruztools.com/downloads/easysetupguide.pdf

Thanks, once again,
drutgat

You're welcome Drutgat, I purchased the cheater driver, haven't had to use it yet, but I'm hopeful it will do the trick when needed, I prefer not to loosen the neck.

most "hardware store" screwdrivers have wedge shaped "load bearing surfaces" because that's what's cheapest/easiest to make, it's also the worst possible tool for screwheads.
gunsmithing type screwdrivers have hollow-ground parallel load bearing surfaces, which cost more to make, but give 100% contact w/the load bearing surfaces of the screw-head.

for the least chance of ever stripping the slot, a hollow ground tip that perfectly fills the slot is best.

I have a MIJ 1968 reissue strat with heel truss rod adjustment
What I did was take the scratchplate off and using a round file gently file a deeper "U" into the scratchplate and then rounding the bevel off finally finishing with some 800 paper wrapped around a dowel to smooth it the same as the scratchplate edges
This enables me to actually get a good fitting screwdriver into the top part of the "X" and gently turn it with mole grips on the screwdriver shaft (whilst covering the guitar top with a cushion to avoid any accidents while adjusting)
Jimi used to do it this way(you can tell by the gouges on his scratchplate, which wasn't filed out enough)
