So the stock pickups in my Fender Blacktop Strat are too muddy for my liking, I'm hoping to get new ones. I am thinking Duncan Black Winters or DiMarzio D-Activators. But the sound I want is like Slipknot's "Gently" from the Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat album (It was their "demo" as they now know it), and they used the same tuning I like. I don't want active pickups, as they would be far out of my price range with installation. I like to downtune, the lowest I would go is B standard, usually I stay in Drop C. Here are the specs to my Strat;
-Alder Body
-Maple Neck, Rosewood Fretboard
-Standard Strat Tremolo
-5-way selector for coil splitting
-Using Ernie Ball 11-guage strings

In case anyone is wondering my amp is an old Fender Frontman, it's a 25 I think. Again, I want to try to get as close as possible with that tone while avoiding active pickups. I know I should upgrade my amp, but when I tried a Squire Strat HH (all stock except strings, has basswood body) it sounded perfect to me! So a pickup that boosts the mid and treble since I heard Alder is naturally bassy?

A good tube amp can make all the difference. When I first bought my BT, on the way home with it I thought that I would probably change the pups. The pups can be a little dark, depending on amp settings, when compared to other pups. But after putting the BT through several good tube amps, and adjusting the tone controls accordingly, I've kept the pups as I really like the tones, clean and drive sounds.

Having said that, I would like to get a second BT and put in a set of Bill Lawrence XL-500 hum-buckers, but I haven't measured to see if they will fit. These pups are very crisp and crunchy on drive channels, and a great warm clean tone also.

Interested to hear other suggestions.

Throw in a set of Lace Sensor Drop & Gains.

Image

The ultimate in drop "D" tuning or for full articulation and punch!

The is the industry's first humbucker that has been designed specifically for the drop "D" tunings and ultra high gain rock, metal and hardcore! A totally redesigned humbucking pickup to help solve the common complaints of muddy and mushy tones, loss of single note articulation, while enhancing the guitar's own unique personality.

The Drop & Gain pickup set is specifically designed for use with heavy, high-gain music that requires drop tunings.

A common complaint amongst the more discerning of these pitch punishing pioneers is that the low end definition gets lost. So in-house tone wizard, Jeff Lace ciphered an industry-first solution. Create a low noise humbucker with discreet coil functions - one to drive output and the other to pull out articulation. The result is all the punch, crunch, sustain and fast articulation a metal music fiend could ever want!
The neck pickup features a fat, overwound tone that’s guaranteed to put a joker-sized smile on the devil himself.

Bring the pain with the Drop & Gain!

I know I need a new amp, so I'm gonna check out the Fender Mustang I V2. Lace Sensor Drop and Gains? They look like active, but I don't see anything about them being so, so I'll assume they're passive. Do you think they'll give me the sound I want?

The Lace Sensors are passive pickups. But I would highly recommend getting a new amp first and maybe adjusting the pickup heights. You may also want to try and remove the pickup covers (assuming that it can be done without damaging the pickups).

How close do you think Lace Sensors in an Alder body will sound to that Slipknot song I linked?
