Probably quite a few of you have seen this ebay listing for a Clapton Neck:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1993-RELIC-USA-Fender-CLAPTON-Stratocaster-NECK-TUNERS-American-Strat-/331147038461

Sure I'd like a discounted Clapton Neck, but upon closer look there are some problems and I'm gonna pass.

Per the listing: A Fender Custom Shop decal has been added to the back of the guitar, and the original serial number has been removed. :?

Question - Who removes the serial number from a Clapton Neck and adds a fake Custom Shop decal?
Answer - The Deranged and/or The Crooked.

The frets are pretty beat despite assurances that they're good, the Tuners look new, the Hector Montes heel stamp looks genuine. :?:

Then there's the string tree, sheesh, it's starting to look like the deranged!

It seems Fake.
The back of a Clapton neck looks like that:

And the front:

The custom shop Clapton has the signature on the back. It does say that the custom shop decall has been added but what is there to guarantee that the same isn't the case with Clapton's signature... I wouldn't buy it.

Yeah, got that, still it's very nice and even more unique for that.

I think the Neck in the listing is being presented as a '93 artist series, non-custom shop, with a fake decal and serial number removed.

The seller is "110% confident this is a vintage USA Clapton neck made by Fender".

Is that story convoluted enough to make a sensible man walk away? I should think so.

I would have to disagree, I think that is in fact a Clapton neck, albeit one that is beat to crap. The neck plate, string tree, CS sticker on the back and the obvious sanding (why remove the serial #?) makes me think someone is trying to salvage a Clapton neck that someone tried to "Relic" and make it appear it is better than it is.

IMHO/YMMV

I would however agree that the individual is deranged to try this...or that there would be 202 bids on it so far

FWIW

I agree, although it's a strange one, fer sure!

There are 36 bids over the last 3 days, high of $202.50, and the bidder with the feedback score of 2 currently leads the bidder with none.

Perhaps the reason for removing the serial number is to hide the provenance.

Looks real to me, but with the wrong string tree. I have had several strats in the past with the Hector Montes stamp on them.

It sort of looks like an American Standard neck that's been "converted" into a Clayton.
IMO.

Of course, it also could be the neck from a stolen guitar being parted out.

I think the latter is a pretty good guess, and I didn't want any part of that.

Winning bid - $305.00.

Anybody ever played a neck with the Warmoth Clapton profile?

Surprised someone actually went for it.
Personally... with a removed serial #... a "Custom Shop" decal added...
There's no doubt in my mind it it's prob a Standard neck dressed up to look like a Clapton.
And with the serial removed... leads me to believe it's prob a hot neck to boot ;)

The seller said it had a V neck back contour and there's not too many Fender USA necks (had the walnut truss rod insert) with that profile.

There is a new Am Std with a soft V back contour, but it's hard to imagine...naah! :D

I'm guessing an "overly warm" Clapton Artist series trying to pass as a (maybe) Custom Shop.
