Hi all, an acqaintance of mine has a Fender Fullerton 1983 '57 Strat RI for sale. I was wondering if I should be deterred by a neck plate serial number beginning with "V03". From my understanding guitars from this era are likely to have serial numbers beginning with "V00" or 'V01". The guitar does have an '83 pencilled neck date, and I am quite sure the guitar is authentic. Even if the neck plate were swapped, should I consider this a deal breaker?

Whether or not it's a Dealbreaker really depends on the Deal...

If it plays well, feels comfortable, is in decent shape and is reasonably priced, I don't see a problem.

cheers!

Price is fully-blown, out-of-proportion ebay price in cash and trade, as it's all the seller will take and he knows I want it. It is the nicest sounding and playing guitar that I have ever come across. Checking throughout, condition is pretty much out the door but for a player such as this, so be it. It has a gorgeous neck tint - very, very dark. The neck feels like home to me. I have probably already convinced myself to buy it as it is the last guitar I'll ever need before going vintage. I am just fed up with the quality of guitars I see in stores nowadays. I know that sounds cynical, but in my experience there is absolutely zero substitute for age and years of playing use on an instrument.

The seller is taking the guitar apart this weekend and sending me pics. I'll post them here as I all know we love a little guitar porn.

If it feels like "home" and you can afford it - DONE DEAL!

What does "condition is pretty much out the door" mean?

Here's the best source article:
http://www.fender.com/support/articles/u-s-instruments-product-dating/

Scroll down to 1982 and it reads:
1982 saw the introduction of the U.S. Vintage Series instruments and “V”-prefix serial numbers. The only way to definitively date U.S. instruments with “V”-prefix serial numbers is to remove the neck and check the butt end of the neck heel for a production date, which may be stamped or written there.

The Neck Plates were probably in a big box and, like headstock serial numbers, weren't necessarily (or even probably) used consecutively.

As some say here in New Jersey, "Don' Worry 'Bout it!" :D

The '57 Vintage Reissues are great guitars...what are you waiting on? BUY IT! I have one from 1982 and it plays and sounds fantastic. It was my main gigging guitar for several years and never let me down once!

The dates found on Fender necks & body cavities are the dates these components were produced. They can then lie in Inventory for up to 18 mos. before being assembled into a completed instrument.

They are used for corroborative purposes only.

cheers!
