For a while I've wanted to replace the pickups in my Rosewood American Standard Stratocaster, and I narrowed the choice down to Fender Custom Shop 54 or 69 but then Fender launched Pure Vintage 56 and 59! I did recently acquire a set of original Fender pups from the 60s but I want to build a different guitar around them. What is the difference between these, I would like to hear them and decide which are best for me but with pups that's impossible? Are the custom shops better in terms of attention to detail and built quality because they are custom shop? Are they actually built in the Custom shop using a different process to the pure vintage pups or are they just designed by the custom shop guys? In other words what advantages do they offer compared to non custom shop pups? Which ones go better with rosewood? I love the sound of Am Vintage 59 guitar, but that's the entire guitar not just the pups. Are 69s really mid scooped, and do they lean more towards the typical sixties or the seventies sound? Which are more vintage correct out of the two groups? I've been busy on the forum today it seems. Thanks for your help!

I have all three sets and they all sound great, all very vintage, low-medium output sets.
The 56 set has the most mids, beautiful cleans, not as punchy as the ohter two. (I guess due to the ALNICO 3 magnets.)
The 59 set has the nicest clean quack sounds, clear and glassy.
The 65 set has the most punch and and output, not as mid-scooped as a 69-type PU set, but still in the same vein. Gritty, very nice.

It's really hard to choose a winner here....I like them all better than the FAT 50s I have too.

And BTW, ALL Fender PUs machine wound, as are the 69s, unless they are signed (not initialed). The CS sticker does not really mean anything in this case...

Yeah that's the first thing that I would do after acquiring some "original Fender pups from the 60s", buy some new pups.

Thereverend, thank you very much for your reply. Which of the three would go best with a Rosewood fingerboard? I like the 56 ones but I suppose they were built to go better with maple. When I listen to the vintage series guitars my favourite are the 56 and 59! So custom shop pups are in no way built with more attention... I thought because they're Custom shop that they would be hand built.

I need these for a completely different guitar.

I think all three PUs work well with rosewood fingerboards.
The question is, which sound you are looking for.
The 59s are more midscooped and punchy, the 56 set has more mids.

Thanks man! I guess I'll get the 59 then. What I found is that I like when I turn up the mids on the amp, but I prefer the pickups that are a mid scooped :)
